Secondly, running produces what is called a “Runner's Heart (enlarged heart)” and “shin splints, arthritis, etc. We are to take care of the temple, not harm it.
NOW, I'm not referring to the “fight or flight” situations that would require running to be necessary such as a dog chasing you or a person seeing their bus taking off, etc.
BUT TO DO THIS ON A REGULAR FOR EXERCISE IS A NO-NO.
If we FOLLOW the TESTIMONY OF JESUS, His words, that the prophet wrote down, we would be blessed for the bible says, “...believe the prophets and so shall ye prosper.” (2 Chronicles 20:20/end of the verse)
“...The more nearly we come into harmony with God’s original plan, the more favorable will be our position to secure health of body and mind and soul.” {AH 135.3}
“It is in the order of God that the physical as well as the mental powers shall be trained; but the character of the physical exercise taken should be in complete harmony with the lessons given by Christ to His disciples...” {CT 281.1}
CHRIST TOLD HIS DISCIPLES THE FOLLOWING:
“I MUST WALK TO DAY, AND TO MORROW, AND THE DAY FOLLOWING...” (Luke 13:33)
Nowhere in the Bible do we see running or jogging as our examples...although Paul does refer to the worldly athletes who run for a prize, he's referring to how temperate they are when preparing for the competition. He's not saying that Christians should run.
Now we are to run in “fight or flight” situations. If a dog is running after you, pray and run, etc.
And the verse that says “...They shall RUN and not be weary...” Is not saying Christians are to run, but if they do run, they won't be weary...think of the last days when you are being chased for your faith....you will run and if you live by the health message and have a relationship with Jesus, when you run, you won't be weary...Amen!!!
I’m now left with the question, “Is running or jogging a SIN, or is it simply not the most effective way to exercise?
We are counseled that we have many things to UNLEARN and much to LEARN AGAIN.
“...They will also have much to unlearn and much to learn again...” (EW 67.2)
And so we have to be careful in how we present things to others.
We are also counseled that the more closely we get to Jesus and follow his principles, the more we will be considered “FANATICS”.
“God’s servants must arm themselves with the mind of Christ. They must not expect to escape insult and misjudgment. They will be called ENTHUSIASTS AND FANATICS. But let them not become discouraged. God’s hand is on the wheel of His providence, guiding His work to the glory of His name.” {OFC 267.4}
“...What if the sincere worker for God should be called a FANATIC? This is the name that those who have been truly devoted to God have ever been called upon to bear...” {RH March 14, 1893, par. 13}
“...They are far behind, and have ridiculed our people as fanatics upon health...” (Te 219.4)
Whenever we teach things to our people, always be sure to have articles to back it up so they can see it's not just the prophet who says this, although we should trust the prophet (for it is the words of Christ) whether there is an article or not
AS FAR AS RUNNING BEING A SIN OR NOT:
Anything that brings an unhealthy situation to the body is a sin. Any violation of God's health laws is the same as breaking the 10 Commandments. If we have been told that nothing can take the place of walking and there are health articles showing that running is actually harmful to the body, then why would we want to run/jog instead of walk?
NOW ONCE AGAIN, there are cases where running may be necessary. That's not what's being referred to here.
However, I'm not going to go around and tell people that it's a sin to run for we have no “straight forward” quote that says so. BUT, I will weigh the evidence out and see that it is not the best and we are counseled to take care of our temples and if we don't, then we are willfully violating our body temples, which that in itself is a sin.
“Every law governing the human machinery is to be considered just as truly divine in origin, in character, and in importance as the word of God. Every careless, inattentive action, any abuse put upon the Lord’s wonderful mechanism, by disregarding His specified laws in the human habitation, is a violation of God’s law...”
It is as truly a sin to violate the laws of our being as it is to break the Ten Commandments. To do either is to break God’s laws...” {CD 17.2-.3}
