It's Mostly In The Mind (Part 5) Treating Depression












DEPRESSION IS A GROWING PROBLEM
***In the year 2020, Depression was the 2nd largest killer after cardiovascular disease.

S/SX: OF DEPRESSION
1.  Persistently sad, anxious or empty mood
2.  Loss of interest or pleasure
       ***If you hear the person say “I used to like to _______, but i don't anymore”...this is a warning signal
3.  Difficulty concentrating or making decisions
4.  Too little or too big of an appetite... undereating or overeating
5.  Recurrent thoughts of death or suicide
6.  Decreased Energy
7.  Feelings of worthlessness or excessive guilt
8.  Increased agitation or increased slowness
9.  Poor sleep or too much sleep

***If you have at least 2 or 3 of these, you have depression.  Four or more = major depression.

Women tend to have more depression due to hormonal imbalances...An imbalance of Estrogen and Progesterone...this causes women to have more emotional disorders. (One example is Postpartum Depression)

Sunshine can help balance out the hormones...It regulates the body clock (Circadian Rhythm)

S.A.D. = Seasonal Affective Disorder usually happens between October and March/April...There's a light box that helps for these months (ranging from $150.00 to $250.00) (apollolight.com)  
***Good for PMS, Post-Partum Depressed Women
***A very good tool to have in your states where there's little sunlight in the winter months. It helps regulate the hormones.

They are very cautious with Bipolar patients because it can increase the serotonin levels so high and if they are given the incorrect drug, it may make the depression worse.

NEAL NEDLEY HAS A DEPRESSION RECOVERY PROGRAM THAT IS VERY GOOD.

***Ask about shift work to those who are depressed...see if any were on shift work. Get these on a regular schedule and have them out in the sunshine.

***According to recent medical science, regularity is more important for bi-polar than medication. We should eat at the same time, wake up and go to sleep at the same time. REGULARITY IS CRUCIAL.

***HIGH DOSES OF OMEGA 3 HELP FOR BIPOLAR. It regulates Bipolar disorder...found in Flaxseed, Walnuts, and LEAFY GREEN VEGETABLES...EVENING PRIMROSE OIL IS GOOD FOR MENOPAUSAL ISSUES
***CHIA SEEDS ARE HIGHER IN OMEGA 3'S, BUT THEY ARE MORE EXPENSIVE.

Be careful with the Oils because it can cause you to gain weight...eat the ground flax....The excess oil that the body can't use, it will come out somewhere through elevated cholesterol, pimples, etc.

FOODS FOR DEPRESSION:
TRYPTOPHAN is needed for Serotonin to be produced.  IT IS ONLY RECEIVED FROM FOOD.
***If you eat the foods with tryptophan in it, it will increase your Serotonin levels, and decrease your need for PROZAC, SELEXA...Serotonin Selective Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI's)..Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft, Selexa...

THE FOODS HIGH IN TRYPTOPHAN ARE:
  • Flax Seed is highest
  • Almonds
  • Black-eyed peas
  • Tofu
  • Oats (cook them at least 2 hours baked on low in the Oven) (pg. 97 Pathways to Health & Happiness...right column...)
  • Lecithin
  • Foods High in Folate are very good for depression (Read Healing Foods Encyclopedia.....Pg. 394)


***INCREASE FOODS HIGH IN MAGNESIUM (Cashews are high in Magnesium, Pumpkin seeds are the highest, Almonds are high, and Bran.
***Increased Magnesium intake will help eliminate HOT FLASHES
***People who eat RAW OATS HAVE A LOT OF LESIONS IN THEIR GRAINS...Raw Oats are High in Phytic Acid and need to be broken down and the only way to break it down is by cooking the grains for several hours.

***These 3 are high in tryptophan.
***ALERT: The dairy industry is engineering a lot of this false information regarding soy in order to shed a bad light...When they pull out Isoflavins...This is what causes Cancer.

***If there's a problem with soy, why have Asians used it for so many years?
***Don't use excessive amounts of Tofu...It can cause Kidney problems because of the excess amount of Protein.

2-3 T. ground flax seed every morning...eat within 15 minutes from the time it was grounded.

***By the way, LOW IRON can lead to depression...Tea depletes the iron from the body as does vinegar.

WALKING & GARDENING are the 2 best exercises for depression...gardening helps you take your mind off of yourself. Schizophrenic patients put out in sun gardening for 8 hours a day and it would go away... Give them a hoe.

SAME RESULTS WITH BIPOLAR PEOPLE
Science is showing that gardening tends to increase serotonin levels. The mice injected with dirt were able to fulfill a task quicker than those who didn't have the dirt.

It's Mostly In The Mind (Part 4) As He Thinketh In His Heart) Dealing With a Person's Thought Processes














We last talked about Elijah's Depression.

God allows people to go through things because their experience can make them stronger with the help of Christ. We all must go through trials.

Ask the people “What is it you think you can learn from this particular situation”...Satan wants us to focus on the negatives of what is happening, but if we can see the positives, there can and will be a blessing in it..

“You have to talk faith, you have to live faith, you have to act faith that you may have an increase of faith.” {Faith and Works 78.2} 

***Talk It; Live It; Act It; Then you can have an increase.

When we ask for patience, we don't expect to learn it in the way it comes to us.

MOVING ON TO ANOTHER TOPIC OF MENTAL HEALTH:
***What you think, you become 

Q:  What is the Bible text that comes to your mind when you say that?
A:  “As he thinketh in his heart, so is he” Proverbs 23:7

Psychologists are just starting to realize that we need to now look at how people think.  There's an area of Psychology called “COGNITIVE BEHAVIOR THERAPY” And now, research is showing, that when people change their thoughts, it actually changes the Neuro Chemistry in their brain.  And so they are starting to work on helping people to change thoughts.

Most of our feelings come from what we tell ourselves...we don't feel bad because of what happened.  We feel bad because of what we tell ourselves.

Example: A church member does not speak to you. You say to yourself, what is wrong with her? I know she saw me” why is she ignoring me? And then you feel bad. It's not because your church member didn't speak to you that you feel bad, it's because of what you tell yourself about what the church member does that you feel bad.

Another Example: Your spouse does something you dislike...you say, “He or she doesn't care for me or respect me”... How do you now feel?  You feel down, low, depressed, you feel sad.

**What can you say to yourself instead that might not lead to those kind of feelings when something does something you don't like?

A:  PERHAPS THEY ARE HAVING A BAD DAY
A:  IT'S SATAN
A:  I KNOW THEY DIDN'T MEAN THAT
Ask yourself this question: Do I have any hard evidence that supports what I am thinking? Telling yourself the truth...we get into problems because we tell ourselves lies, and we follow it, believe it and act on it.

Tell your spouse “My arm hurts” and he doesn't say anything...then you think he doesn't care for you etc...Now gentlemen, a special attention is nice, so be mindful of what your spouse is going through.

When you are worried, find scripture to counteract the thought.


For those who worry about financial matters (Matthew 6:33)...when you repeat that, it counteracts thoughts of will I get the mortgage paid, etc.

Looking for scripture before the situation comes about is very important to counteract that thought.

Q:  What are some other bible verses that you think can counteract that kind of thinking...? 
       (Deuteronomy 33:25b)
A:  “As thy day, so shall thy strength be”...have people quote that who deal with a lot of stress...have them repeat it to themselves...

This lady went through so much stress, and she was not a Christian, and she said this helped her more than anything.

Thoughts affect feelings and they also affect our behavior.

We can respond in an angry way and shut down when we think we have been mistreated...remember, it's how we think that determines how we respond.

THOUGHTS EFFECT: 
FEELINGS
BEVAVIOR AND
OUR BODY


Every time you have an angry thought, an unkind thought, a sad thought, your brain releases chemicals that make your body feel bad...the reverse is true as well. These are endorphins in the body.

***Studies show that if you are angry for 5 minutes, this can suppress your immune system for 5 hours.

***One bitter thought changes the blood chemistry from alkali to acidic.


A lot of people are hospitalized because they're so sensitive to how other people think and how they react.
It's called distorted self-image...not really seeing what's in the mirror and you need the Holy Spirit to show you that.

Christian's beware of secular psychology...you would be amazed, according to Dr. Parks said we would be amazed at how we used are acting out secular psychology principles in our own lives, in our homes, and in the church, etc.


Another Dr. at NIMH; (National Institute of Mental Health) studied the activity of the brain in 10 normal women under three conditions:

1.When they were thinking happy thoughts
2. When they were thinking neutral thoughts
          and
3. When they were thinking sad thoughts

During the happy thoughts, the limbic system was just kind of cooled down, not doing much activity.  During the sad thoughts, the limbic system was working up.  What is the limbic system responsible for? EMOTIONS. This Dr. was actually able to see on whatever medical device he used, that when they had sad thoughts, the limbic system was actually heating up...acting up, so there's actually a physiological response that goes on in our bodies with these types of thoughts.

And that's the problem with secular Psychology regarding “TALK THERAPY”  it does nothing to the frontal lobe...all it effects is the limbic system...people say “I feel so much better”, but then next week they are at square one.

What part of the brain do we really need to impact to make changes?
The frontal lobe...if we just talk about the problems, you will only feel better, but not get better. Depressed people have very little activity in the frontal lobe...Happy people have very active frontal lobes...

Q:  What does this tell you about frontal lobe and depression? 
A:  That depression suppresses frontal lobe activity...Or, the other way around might be, suppressed frontal lobe activity leads to depression.

And what studies show is that virtually all depressed people do not have enough activity in their frontal lobe...that's why we need to stay away from terrible programs, etc...and things that will affect the frontal lobe because that's an underlying factor and Dr. Magna parks says that she did not learn this in the school that taught her psychology.. She learned this after studying the health message.

According to Dr. Parks, in 2 to 8 sessions, people would be COMPLETELY CURED OF DEPRESSION by applying all these things we have discussed previously.

IMPROPER LIFESTYLE CAN LEAD TO DEPRESSION

Q:  Do you know that Jesus often addressed people's thoughts...He did this mainly when he was dealing with what group of people.  
A:  Pharisees...He said to them “Why think ye evil in your hearts?”

So Jesus, even in the Bible, confirms that people need to get a hold of their thoughts. And then when you look at the flood, before the flood came. 

Q: What did Genesis 6:5 say? 
A: Their THOUGHTS WERE EVIL CONTINUALLY...You see, and if you read in Patriarchs and Prophets about some of the things they were doing, it was the thoughts that led them to do engage in many of those behaviors.  So the Bible confirms THE IMPORTANCE OF US GETTING A HOLD OF OUR THOUGHTS.
Read 2 Corinthians 10:5
***As you practice counteracting the thought, they will decrease in frequency.
WARNING: Dr. Magna Parks said when she would counsel sexual predators, in school, she and all the other Psychologists were taught that these men cannot change...We know this is false...However, one of the main things they would teach these men who would have certain thoughts was to  CHANGE THEIR THOUGHTS...So even in the World, they are recognizing the importance of changing the thought process.

Even with pornography cause you can sit there looking at the pictures with no one seeing you and your thoughts can get going.

Masturbation is continued by the process of thoughts...The thought process has to be addressed. There are things you can do on a human level to deal with these issues..

THERE'S A LOT OF THINGS WE ARE DEALING WITH BECAUSE OF THE THOUGHTS
Thoughts can contribute to:
a. Physical Problems
b. Spiritual Problems
c. Mental Problems
d. Anxiety Issues

***Science is showing that if you can help people deal better with their thoughts, you can help depression and anxiety, but we know THE MAIN KEY IS CHRIST.

Great peace have they which love thy law and nothing shall offend them (Psalms 119:165)...Have these people read Exodus 20:3-17 and a Psalm every day if possible.

Have those having anxiety to change their thoughts that they won't die ....tell them to pray and speak positive things to themselves...Call upon me in the day of trouble; I will deliver thee and thou shalt glorify me.” (Psalms 50:15)

At a workshop, a psychologist said “what we think is killing us.” 
It’s not what's happening in life is killing us, it's what we think that is killing us.

Q: BY THE WAY, WHERE DO ENVY & JEALOUSY BEGIN?
A: IN THE MIND 
***envy & jealousy made King Solomon into a mad man.

Thoughts & feelings make up the character...so the thoughts that we have and the feelings that we have make up the character.

Did you know that our “thoughts' are written in the books of heaven?  If we keep that in our minds, our thoughts would be different.

When dealing with your spouse and other people, recognize the impact of how you think.  Remember she says thoughts and feelings are strengthened by utterance.

Each thought you have, is almost making grooves in the brain, and it's like footprints in the sandThe more you walk in that particular groove, the more it's deeper. The less you do, the groove will go away.

It's Mostly In The Mind (Part 3)












In order to have good Mental Health, a person truly needs to follow the laws of health, especially Diet, Rest, Water, Sunshine, Exercise, Trust in God, etc.

Now, here are some of the laws of the mind per the SOP:

#1. 
“It is a law of the mind that it will narrow or expand to the dimension of the thing which it becomes familiar.” (MCP 417)

***Your mind will either narrow or expand based upon the things that you become familiar with...Name a thing or two that can make the mind narrow and might decrease your learning ability...
the Bible is one of the greatest expanders of the mind.

***Whenever helping people with mental disorders try to 
get them to start reading the scriptures even if it's just a Proverb a day.

#2. 
God designed that men shall not decide from impulse, but from weight of evidence.” (MCP 417)

Reasoning out things exercises the mind...Don't always make impulsive decisions…think things through before giving an answer or before coming to a conclusion without weighing out the evidence.

#3. 
It is a law of nature that our thoughts and feelings are encouraged and strengthened as we give them utterance.” (MCP 419-420)

If we have a thought in our mind or a feeling in our heart and we speak it, we strengthen those feelings by speaking them...This can be true of the positive things as well.  LIFE AND DEATH ARE IN THE POWER OF THE TONGUE

While words express thoughts it is often true that thoughts follow words”…THIS IS PART OF THE SAME QUOTE (MCP 419-420 )

#4. 
It is an important law of the mind, that when a desired object is so firmly denied as to remove all hope, the mind will soon cease to long for it and will be occupied in other pursuits.  But as long as there is any hope of gaining the desired object, an effort will be made to obtain it.” (MCP 419)..

If you are trying to teach someone, such as a child to not desire a certain item, take away all hope of them getting it...
if you don't want them whining for the cookies, remove the cookies from the home or the candy...Don't give in to their whining. For adults, it can be taking cigarettes out of the house and ash trays, etc.

#5. 
The consciousness of right doing is the best medicine for diseased bodies and minds.” (1T 502)
***These people do not have to deal with the guilt.

WHAT ABOUT THIS?

Isaiah 58:6 – Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke?

58:7 Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh?

58:8 Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily: and thy righteousness shall go before thee; the glory of the LORD shall be thy rereward.

SHE SAYS: “The True principles of Psychology are found in the scriptures.” (MCP 10)
***Just a couple of years ago, the American Psychological Association in their book called THE MONITOR found that people who provide support to others, whether it be a spouse, relative, friend, etc. live 5 years longer.

BY THE WAY, “Exercise in the open air should be prescribed as a life giving necessity. And for such exercises, there is nothing better than the cultivation of the soil.  Let patients have flower beds to care for, or work to do in an orchard or vegetable garden” (MH 266-267)

***Gardening is excellent for the mind and it helps take their mind off of themselves.

#6. 
Idleness weakens brain power.”  (MCP) The reason the youth have so little strength of brain and muscle is because they do little in the line of useful labor.    ***Read MCP 2, PG. 603.2

Youth are not as useful in labor as they used to be and we wonder why our youth are getting into so much trouble.

#7. 
“Irregular hours of eating and sleeping saps the brain forces.” {2MCP 388.1} 

#8. 
Let the will be kept awake and rightly directed and it will impart energy to the whole being and will be a wonderful aid in the maintenance of health.” (MH 244-246)..

Do you know she also says that the will goes with the labor of the hand…in other words, the more we work and do something, the stronger our will becomes.
  ***Many people have strong wills or weak wills because they are or are not exercising the will properly.

You know one way to exercise the will...
every day do something that you don't like...research has shown when you do this, this will increase your will.

Q:  WHY DO YOU THINK THAT HAPPENS?
A:  Seeing what you have accomplished will motivate you to do more...
       Let everybody be subject to the higher powers...it helps with discipline.

#9. They should discipline their minds to be retentive.” (MCP 241)

Q:  HOW CAN THIS BE DONE? 

A:  By memorizing scripture

***We need to discipline our minds to be able to retain information because 
“Forgetfulness is sin.”

***Stay away from white sugar if you are dealing with mental illness...white sugar is one atom away from cocaine. http://www.hcgfatloss.com/wordpress/?p=370


White sugar shuts down the functioning of the frontal lobe and remember the prophet of the Lord says that sugar is more injurious than meat.  It's a malignant poison and it becomes alcohol when milk is added to it.

***Another thing to 
stay away from is “refined products”...anything refined has the B Vitamins pulled from it...and remember that the B Vitamins are very important for the brain.

***Disease can lead to depression. (2MCP 484.2)

NATURAL WAYS TO TREAT DEPRESSION:


1.  Hydrotherapy:
One of the main hydrotherapy Tx. for depression is the contrast shower.
  Hot and cold.  3 minutes hot, 30 seconds to 1 minute cold, 3 times rotating from hot to cold. (Do for 6 months, then here and there.)

***And that particular treatment raises certain Neurochemicals in the brain:  Serotonin, Dopamine and Nor-Epinephrine...All of these are implicated in Depression.  And the medications that are out there will.  And it's especially helpful for depression

2.  
Mild dehydration can cause depressionso be certain to stress the importance of proper hydration.

3.  
Sunshine is important, especially if you are trying to resent the body clock. If you have problems going to sleep, be sure to get your sunshine around 9:00 am in the morning...if you have problems staying asleep, you want to get sunshine in the late afternoon,about 4 or 5
o'clock...and if you have problems with both, do both (But don't forget we are counseled to exercise/walk in the morning hours)...this helps especially those people who have a disrupted circadian rhythm which can be caused by shift work, or not eating regularly or not going to bed and awaking regularly...

Q:  SUNSHINE IS ALSO IMPORTANT FOR WHAT PARTICULAR HORMONE/VITAMIN ...
A:  VITAMIN D levels are crucial for treating depression...remember, greater than 50...and the test to check is a 25 hydroxy.

For People with very low levels of Vitamin D and have MS, they say 10,000 IU's a day is beneficial...but this is for a short duration and then have the levels rechecked.

Sunshine, when you get it during the day, it produces serotonin
at night it produces melatonin, so you are getting double benefits when you get the sunshine...sunshine is very very key....when you meet people with fatigue or other types of symptoms like that, tell them to go get their vitamin d levels checked...

4.  
Sleep:
The best time to get to bed is at least 
2 hours before midnight, but everything should be out by 9:00...2 hours before midnight is worth more than 4 after midnight...proper sleep helps with the growth hormones as well as the serotonin and melatonin levels.

***A lot of the restorative work of the brain, a lot of it, the major portion of it takes place between 10 to 12...science is showing this now.

***More and more teenagers today are getting depressed because they are not getting enough sleep...They are either on the computer, texting or chatting at the hours they should be sleeping.

5.  
Proper breathing is very important for treating depression.
***This is a thing that helps a lot of people dealing with anxiety attacks...They hyperventilate...
as soon as they start to feel that come on, they should start the deep breathing exercisesBe sure to have them keep their windows open when sleeping at night.

Q:  Who got depressed in the Bible?
A:  Elijah

Q:  Why?
A.  “However courageous and successful a man may be, unless he looks CONSTANTLY TO GOD WHEN CIRCUMSTANCES ARISE TO TEST HIS FAITH, HE WILL LOSE HIS COURAGE.

Right after Elijah conquered those 850 false prophets, we next see him depressed.

Why?

Because we can get so puffed up and then take our eyes off of Jesus.

It's Mostly In The Mind (Part 2)










Q: WHAT YOU READ ALSO EFFECTS THE FRONTAL LOBE:
(Go to Ministry of Healing pg. 445.3 starting off with...THERE ARE WORKS OF FICTION) Under True Education vs. False

A: Novel Reading/Fictional Reading (This would head under LIFETIME TV)

Schizophrenia is also centered in the frontal lobe...When we read Novels, it puts us into an imaginary world.

When dealing with people, have them read things that will stimulate the mind.


When dealing with depressed people, whether they are Atheists, Infidels or Christians, have them read the Proverbs that corresponds with the date of the month.  IT WORKS. It's abstract information so they have to work the brain.

Q:  WHAT ELSE?
A:  Exercising the Mind

In Genesis we are told IN THE SWEAT OF THY FACE, THOU SHALT EAT BREAD.  Remember He told Adam that? That was a curse, but it was also a blessing...Because if Adam didn't have exercise, what would have happened?

AN IDLE MIND IS THE DEVIL'S WORKSHOP
It is the idle mind that is Satan's workshop...”    {Ed 189.5}

LET'S TALK ABOUT WHAT EXERCISE CAN DO:
***Older people who exercise 3 or 4 times a week have a decreased risk of Alzheimer's.  And now research is showing that it could even help with Alzheimer's.  So, if you ever do a consultation with anyone who has any type of dementia or Alzheimer's, you want to have them exercise at least 3 or 4 times a week...AND,

WHICH IS THE BEST EXERCISE?
WALKING IS THE BEST.
According to research, children who play vigorously 20-40 minutes per day are better able to do their schoolwork, do Math, and do class projects.  

***First of all, in our books like Education and Fundamental Principles of Education, we are told that children should not have a formal type of education until they are at least 8-10.  Were you aware that she refers to them as infants at the ages of 6 & 7?  Also, were you aware, when they are to the ages of 8-10 and older, that they should only have a couple of hours maximum of textbook learning per day and an equal amount of time outdoors doing some type of practical duty?

By the way, the classroom is no place for children to be sitting for 6-8 hours a day.  Especially for boys.  And if you are dealing with a boy who can't sit still, have him go outside and exert his energy in playing for at least 30 minutes....Do you see why it is important that God's people move to the country setting?
WERE YOU AWARE THAT THEY ARE NOW TAKING OUT PHYSICAL EDUCATION IN A LOT OF THE SCHOOLS? This causes teachers to have to deal with a lot of behavioral problems.

***If you are dealing with someone who has an anxiety attack, tell them to immediately go outside and take a walk for 15-20 minutes...This is known to reduce or eliminate an anxiety attack.

You're being taught in a way so that you will be able to go out and help people.

***NEUROGENESIS = THE PROCESS OF GROWING NEW BRAIN CELLS 
(Brain Cells regenerate in 1 yr.)

When you exercise, it helps the part of the brain that's good for learning and memory to grow new brain cells, known as the Hippocampus.  

***Exercise causes NEUROGENESIS IN THE HIPPOCAMPUS...That's part of the brain for learning & memory.  Can you imagine what would happen if we did that for children with learning disabilities???

Q: ONCE AGAIN, WHICH EXERCISE IS THE BEST???  
A:  WALKING

***By the way, The Hippocampus is the first part of the brain that starts to deteriorate with Alzheimer's

Do you know, very soon, Alzheimer's is going to become an epidemic because people are exercising less.

***By the way, A study at Loma Linda University showed that regular eaters of meat, including those who consume poultry and fish, are at twice the risk of getting Dementia/Alzheimer's.  

There are now 39 yr. olds walking around with Alzheimer's due to lifestyle.  

Research shows that Alzheimer's has Beta Amyloid Plaquing in the brain. 

Q:  WHAT IS THIS TYPE OF PLAQUING?
A:

I said before that we should be in bed by 9:30 and asleep by 10.  Well, I have since been given the following quote by a friend and thought I would share it with everyone:

There should be absolutely nothing done in the bedroom except for dressing and sleeping. You should not have a TV in your bedroom or a radio to put you to sleep.

There shouldn't be any reading or eating in there...because if you do, you will be sending a confused message to your brain...Also, do not watch the clock at night if you have any sleep problems.
