Food Combinations – Fruits and Vegetables

WHEN TEACHING HEALTH, WE SHOULD TEACH FROM 3 PERSPECTIVES:
1. Bible (Isaiah 8:20; Matthew 4:4)
2. SOP (Isaiah 8:20; Revelation 12:17; Revelation 19:10)

3. Good Scientific Information that does not contradict the Bible or the SOP. (Daniel and his 3 friends knew the Sciences of their day. They were 10x’s wiser than all the others) (Daniel 1:7, 20)

AS A PEOPLE, WE ARE TO SPEAK THE SAME THINGS: (1 Corinthians 1:10)

“Jesus designed that the faith of His people should be one. If one goes forth preaching one thing, and another differing with him preaches something else, how can those who believe through their word be one? There will be difference of sentiments...” {1T 326.2}

“…ye must step fast. Some of us have had time to get the truth and to advance step by step, and every step we have taken has given us strength to take the next. But now time is almost finished, and what we have been years learning, they will have to learn in a few months. They will also have much to unlearn and much to learn again…” {EW 67.2}

BIBLE:
3 John 2 – “Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.”

“…Education should be given on proper diet…” (CD 406.4)

“…Disease is an effort of nature to free the system from conditions that result from a violation of the laws of healthIn case of sickness, the cause should be ascertained. Unhealthful conditions should be changed, wrong habits corrected. Then nature is to be assisted in her effort to expel impurities and to re-establish right conditions in the system.” {MH 127.1}

Pure air, sunlight, abstemiousness, rest, exercise, PROPER DIET, the use of water, trust in divine power-- these are the true remedies. Every person should have a knowledge of nature's remedial agencies and how to apply themIt is essential both to understand the principles involved in the treatment of the sick and to have a practical training that will enable one rightly to use this knowledge. {MH 127.2}

You are to apply the laws of life and health to your own caseIn violating the laws of healthyou misrepresent your maker…” {KC 20.4}

“The richness of food and complicated mixtures of food are health destroying.”  {CD 113.4}

“Rich and complicated mixtures of food are health destroying. Highly seasoned meats and rich pastry are wearing out the digestive organs of children.” --U. T., Nov. 5, 1896.  {HL 63.4}

IMPROPER FOOD COMBINATIONS

“The less that condiments and desserts are placed upon our tables, the better it will be for all who partake of the food. All mixed and complicated foods are injurious to the health of human beings. Dumb animals would never eat such a mixture as is often placed in the human stomach. . . . Rich and complicated mixtures of food are health destroying.”  --U. T., Nov. 5, 1896.  {HL 166.3}

“The less condiments and desserts are placed on our tables the better it will be for all who partake of the food. All mixed and complicated foods are injurious to the health of human beings. Dumb animals would never eat such a mixture as is placed in the human stomachThe amount of cooking done is not at all necessary, neither should there be any poverty-stricken diet, either in quality or quantity, but the richness of the food and complicated mixtures are destroying. ….It is much easier to create an unnatural appetite than to correct and reform the taste after it has become second nature.”  {SpM 46.4}

COMBINATION OF FOODS

Knowledge in regard to proper food combinations is of great worth, and is to be received as wisdom from God.”  {CD 109.4}

Do not have too great a variety at a meal; three or four dishes are a plenty. At the next meal you can have a change. The cook should tax her inventive powers to vary the dishes she prepares for the table, and the stomach should not be compelled to take the same kinds of food meal after meal.”  {CD 109.5}

There should not be many kinds at any one meal, but all meals should not be composed of the same kinds of food without variation. Food should be prepared with simplicity, yet with a nicety which will invite the appetite.”  {CD 110.1}

It would be much better to eat only two or three different kinds of food at a meal than to load the stomach with many varieties.”  {CD 110.2}

“Many are made sick by the indulgence of their appetite...So many varieties are introduced into the stomach that fermentation is the result. This condition brings on acute disease, and death frequently follows.”  {CD 110.3}

“The variety of food at one meal causes unpleasantness, and destroys the good which each article, if taken alone, would do the system. This practice causes constant suffering, and often death.” {CD 110.4}

There should not be a great variety at any one meal, for this encourages overeating, and causes indigestion.”  {CD 112.2}

SUGGESTIONS TO SEDENTARY WORKERS

Disturbance is created by improper combinations of food; fermentation sets in; the blood is contaminated and the brain confused.”  {CD 110.6}

“The habit of overeating, or of eating too many kinds of food at one mealfrequently causes dyspepsia. Serious injury is thus done to the delicate digestive organs. In vain the stomach protests, and appeals to the brain to reason from cause to effect. The excessive amount of food eaten, or the improper combination, does its injurious work. In vain do disagreeable premonitions give warning. Suffering is the consequence. Disease takes the place of health.” {CD 110.7}

FRUIT & VEGETABLES NOT TO BE EATEN AT SAME MEAL:

It is not well to eat fruit and vegetables at the same mealIt is better to have the fruit at one meal, and the vegetables at another.”  {CD 112.3}

“…Fruit and vegetables taken at one meal produce acidity of the stomachthen impurity of the blood results, and the mind is not clear because the digestion is imperfect.

You should understand that every organ of the body is to be treated with respect. In the matter of diet, you must reason from cause to effect.” (See Isaiah 1:1) {CD 112.6}

It is not well to eat fruit and vegetables at the same mealthe use of both will often cause distress, and inability to put forth mental effortIt is better to have the fruit at one meal, and the vegetables at another.” {CD 112.3}

IS IT OKAY TO MIX TOMATOES WITH VEGETABLES?

“…Have fruit at one meal and vegetables at the next…” {CD 394.3}

“…I have vermicelli-tomato soup one meal and greens the next…” {CD 324.1}

EXCEPTIONS TO THE RULE OF MIXING FRUIT & VEGGIES ARE:

  • Lemon juice may be used on vegetables. “…My thistle greens, nicely cooked, and seasoned with sterilized cream and lemon juice, are very appetizing…” {CD 324.1}
  • Olives may be eaten at all meals  “Olives may be so prepared as to be eaten with good results at every   meal…”  (CD 349.4)

WHAT IS A VEGETABLE?

Note:  Vegetables should be cooked until they are perfectly tender but not overdone. Many cooks spoil their vegetables by cooking them too long, while quite as many more serve them in an underdone state to preserve their form. Either plan makes them less palatable, and likely to be indigestible.

DO NOT EAT VEGETABLES RAW: (Cook till tender)

In the study of hygiene, students should be taught the nutrient value of different foods. The effect of a concentrated and stimulating diet, also of foods deficient in the elements of nutrition, should be made plain. Tea and coffee, fine-flour bread, pickles, COARSE VEGETABLES, candies, condiments, and pastries fail of supplying proper nutrimentMany a student has broken down as the result of using such foods…”  (Ed 204.3)

Raw vegetables steals iodine from the body and the enzyme is not released for proper mineral absorption.

VEGETABLES NOT TO BE EATEN WITH DESSERT:

Puddings, custards, sweet cake, and vegetables, all served at the same meal, will cause a disturbance in the stomach.”  {CD 112.5}

PREPARE VEGETABLES WITHOUT SPICES OR GREASE:

“…The health reform would be a great benefit to you both, if you would strictly carry it outrelish a plain, simple diet, composed of unbolted wheat flour, vegetables and fruits prepared without spices or grease, you are continually transgressing the laws which God has established in your system…”  (CD 123.4)

IT’S A SIN IF YOU DO:

“…because you do not relish a plain, simple diet, composed of unbolted wheat flour, vegetables and fruits prepared without spices or grease, you are continually transgressing the laws which God has established in your system…” (CD 123.4)

VEGETABLES NOT TO BE EATEN AT THIRD MEAL:

“…Let the students have the third meal, prepared without vegetables, but with simple, wholesome food, such as fruit and bread.” (CD 178.4)

VEGETABLES AND FRUITS ARE TO BE WITHOUT DECAY:

“…Vegetables and fruits in their season will be beneficial, if they are of the best quality, not showing the slightest sign of decaybut are sound and unaffected by any disease or decay. More die by eating decayed fruit and decayed vegetables which ferment in the stomach and result in blood poisoning, than we have any idea of.” {CD 309.6}

WHO CHOSE OUR DIET?
Grains, fruits, nuts, and vegetables constitute the diet chosen for us by our Creator. These foods prepared in as simple and natural a manner as possible, are the most healthful and nourishing. They impart a strength, a power of endurance, and a vigor of intellect, that are not afforded by a more complex and stimulating diet…” (CD 310.2)

“…The grains, with fruits, nuts, and vegetables, contain all the nutritive properties necessary to make good blood.” {CD 313.3}

“…With such bread, and the abundant fruits, vegetables, and grains with which our country aboundsno greater luxuries should be desired.”  {CD 320.1}

The Lord intends to bring His people back to live upon simple fruits, vegetables, and grains.” {CD 322.5}

IMPORTANCE OF GROWING OUR OWN

“…All should be acquainted with the special value of fruits and vegetables fresh from the orchard and garden…” (CD 312.4)

Many do not see the importance of having land to cultivate, and of raising fruit and vegetables, that their tables may be supplied with these things. I am instructed to say to every family and every church, God will bless you when you work out your own salvation with fear and trembling…” {CD 323.3}

WEAKNESS DUE TO NOT EATING VEGETABLES:

When flesh is discarded, its place should be supplied with a variety of grains, nuts, vegetables, and fruits, that will be both nourishing and appetizing. This is especially necessary in the case of those who are weak, or who are taxed with continuous labor…” (CD 397.4)

“…Some fall into the error that because they discard meat, they have no need to supply its place with THE BEST fruits and vegetables, prepared in their most natural state, FREE FROM GREASE AND SPICES…” (CD 399.1)

“…Hearty men must have PLENTY OF VEGETABLES, FRUITS, and GRAINS…” CD 322.4

Provide an abundance of good, wholesome food. Do not practice economy in this direction. Restrict your meat bills, but have plenty of good fruit and vegetables…It will make blood and muscle, and give strength for daily duties…” {CD 409.4}

“…It is the variety and mixture of meat, vegetables, fruit, wines, tea, coffee, sweet cakes, and rich pies that ruin the stomach, and place human beings in a position where they become invalids with all the disagreeable effects of sickness upon the disposition…” {CD 410.4}

The light that God has given and will continue to give on the food question is to be to His people today what the manna was to the children of Israel…” {MM 267.2}

GOOD TO KNOW: The majority of living beings synthesize their own vitamin C. Only a few, including humans, must take it in with their food. The human body's overwhelming need for vitamin C can only be naturally met by eating FRESH FRUIT. Although some vegetables also contain vitamin C, ITS PRIMARY DIETARY SOURCE IS FRUIT

 FRUIT & VEGGIES are a primary source of phytochemicals and antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals.

 Sources: for Vitamin A are dark-green, orange or yellow vegetables and fruit: For Vitamin C, red bell peppers and citrus fruit are recommended.

NEVER EAT FRUIT & VEGETABLES AT THE SAME MEAL “If we would Preserve the best health, we should avoid eating vegetables and fruit at the same meal. HAVE FRUIT AT ONE MEAL, and VEGETABLES AT THE NEXT.” (CD 394-395)

WHY NOT? “Fruit and vegetables taken at one meal produce acidity of the stomach; then impurity of the blood results, AND THE MIND IS NOT CLEAR because the digestion is imperfect.” (CD 112-113)

WHEN MIXING FRUIT WITH VEGETABLES, THE FOLLOWING HAPPENS WITHIN THE BODY:

  • Blood made impure (CD 110)
  • Fermentation (CD 110)
  • Imperfect digestion (CD 113)
  • Stomach acidity (CD 113)
  • Stomach distressed by (CD 395)
  • The brain confused by (CD 395)
