It's Mostly In The Mind (Part 1)













This is a 6 part series and I will be posting one part every day.

“Dealing with the minds is nice work.”  (3T 184)

Dealing with human minds is the most delicate work ever entrusted to mortals...”  {CT 264.1}

“...It is dangerous to do careless work in dealing with minds.”  {5T 405.1}

WE ARE TOLD THE FOLLOWING:
“Explain how closely body and mind are related and show the need of keeping both in the very best condition.”  {CH 543.4}

“Sickness of the mind prevails everywhere. NINE TENTHS OF THE DISEASES FROM WHICH MEN SUFFER HAVE THEIR FOUNDATION HERE…

But few realize the power that the mind has over the bodyA great deal of the sickness which afflicts humanity has its origin in the mind and can only be cure by restoring the mind to health...”  {3T 183.2} 

The state of the mind has largely to do with the health of the body.  And especially with the health of the digestive organs.” (CD 375.2)

Proverbs 23:7 – 
“For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he...” 

***Many people think themselves to sickness...and they truly are sick.

EXAMPLE OF A WOMAN WHO THOUGHT A BATH WOULD INJURE HER

“If your mind is impressed and fixed that a bath will injure you, the mental impression is communicated to all the nerves of the body...The brain sends this intelligence to the nerves of the body, and the blood vessels, held in obedience to your will, cannot perform their office and cause a reaction after the bath...” {3T 69.4}

***The way to have a healthy mind is to have a healthy brain.
***A lot of depression is related to not properly taking care of our brains.

“All need to become acquainted with that most wonderful of all organisms, the human body. They should understand the functions of the various organs and the dependence of one upon another for the healthy action of all. They should study the influence of the mind upon the body, and of the body upon the mind, and the laws by which they are governed.”  {MH 128.1}

***So, as Medical Missionaries, you are going to be able to understand the laws that govern the influence of the mind on the body, and the body on the mind.

Now let's talk about some aspects of Lifestyle and how it effects the mind:

SOME PEOPLE SUFFER FROM ANXIETY

Q:  DO YOU KNOW WHICH PLANT FOOD/FOODS ARE GOOD FOR ANXIETY?
A:  WHEATGERM – 2 T. of Wheat GermVery Important...The reason being is because it is high in B-Vitamins.  B-Vitamins are very important for the nervous system.  If you know anyone who is anxious or nervous, have them take at least 2 T. of Wheat Germ every morning.  It balances and invigorates the nervous system due to its high nutritional value. (Encyclopedia of Foods and Their Healing Power, Volume 2, pg. 34.

***By the way, (go to pg. 310 and look at the composition chart at the bottom of the pg.) were you aware that taking Folic Acid in a supplement is dangerous to health, but in Wheat Germ, you can find high traces of it…even more than the B-Vitamins. So if you know anyone who is low in folate/folic acid, tell them to take Wheat Germ.

A: BANANAS.  Bananas are also very good for anxiety and if you happen to have a deficiency in some of the minerals found in bananas, this too can cause anxiety. 
Some of these minerals are: 
1. Vitamin B-6
2. Carbohydrates
3. Potassium AND
4. Magnesium

*Any deficiency in these can cause Anxiety (go to Vol. 2, pg. 34. Also, show a chart of the banana on page 70)

***You can go to your Doctor and say I would like a Vitamin Profile or Vitamin Panel and say you would like this done so I may see the levels of the different Vitamins and Minerals in my body...Cause some suffer from an emotional disorder, and it just may be due to a deficiency of these crucial minerals.

THINGS TO STAY AWAY FROM IF YOU HAVE ANXIETY
1.  Anything that is a stimulant or stimulating to the system:

a. Caffeine is one of the main items we need to stay away from, especially if one suffers from anxiety
b. Vinegar
c. Meat
d. Cigarettes
e. Alcohol
f.  Spices

In graduate school, the students are taught that Bulimia has to do with being in a dysfunctional family, and the mother is too controlling, so the person gains control by eating as much as they want and then throwing up afterwards...But even in this book, they tell you what to eat for Bulimia...WHOLE GRAINS, SALAD, FRUIT...All these things can help with those who have Bulimia...And the students are not taught the connection between food and these disorders.

In many cases, things going on with the brain have to do with, certain foods items need to be increased.
This whole Volume (Volume 2) deals with which foods to eat for which system of the body...For example, on pages 40-51, there is a whole section as to which foods to eat that help the Nervous System.

IT TALKS ABOUT FOOD FOR:
   1. Anxiety
   2. Stress
   3. Alzheimer's
   4. Hyperactivity (ADHD)

***If you have kids that are hyperactive, you need to INCREASE THEIR VITAMIN B levels and DECREASE THEIR SUGAR.

There was a lady whose child was about to be put on Ritalin, and Dr. Parks put her on a program...she said no cartoon and no video games...all they can watch are nature videos and go out in nature...In 2 months time, the Hyperactivity was gone.

We may not understand many of the diseases of the mind, but just apply the laws of health and you will see healing happen.

FOR THOSE SUFFERING FROM INSOMNIA, THEY NEED TO BE EATING MORE:
   1.  Oats
   2.  Honey
   3.  Lettuce
   4.  Good Carbohydrates...All of those are foods that will help calm a person down so they can get to sleep
better...

WHAT ARE SOME FOODS THAT HURT THE MIND:
1. Stimulants
   
2. Caffeine (What's a common food that many SDA's like to eat that has caffeine? CHOCOLATE...If you suffer from anxiety or insomnia, you need to stay away from Chocolate with a 10 foot pole because that will keep you stimulated.
   
3.  Also...HAMBURGER AND FRIES CAN BE ADDICTIVE.

A HAMBURGER AND FRIES CAN BE JUST AS ADDICTIVE AS CIGARETTES AND EVEN DRUGS. Scientists at Wisconsin say high doses of fat and sugar in fast foods are processed in the same way as NICOTINE, HEROIN AND OTHER SUBSTANCES THAT BECOME HABIT FORMING...So when you eat a high fat diet continually, your brain processes it the same way that it does some of these things that we look down on people on for using.  So when people say they have a hard time getting off of these foods, they're not lying to us.

A high fat diet also makes the blood sluggish, so when it's flowing through your brain, your brain downs not function as well because the blood is sticky and thick, so we need to make sure that our diets are not high in fat.

DO YOU KNOW THAT CONDIMENTS HAVE AN IMPACT ON THE BRAIN?
1. Nutmeg, Vinegar, Pepper, Chili’s

***ANYTHING that stimulates the body makes the blood feverish.

Vinegar erodes the dental enamel on our teethit can cause anemia/; it can cause problems with gastritis...AND THERE IS NO SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE TO SHOW THAT APPLE CIDER VINEGAR CAN HELP.

Vinegar can cause anemia, and anemia can lead to depression.

Research shows that if you are dealing with any kind of SEXUAL ADDICTION, you need to take out all spices: Nutmeg, Pepper, Cinnamon, Caffeine, Mace, etc.
The frontal lobe houses our will, it houses how impulsive we are and it houses our self-control...We are doing many things that decrease our self-control.

Q: WHAT ARE SOME THINGS WE ARE DOING TO OUR MIND THAT MAKES IT MORE DIFFICULT FOR US TO CONTROL OURSELVES?
A: Television

Q: Have you heard of an EEG?
EEG stands for Electroencephalogram.  It MEASURES THE BRAIN WAVES. When they hook brain waves to people watching certain television programs, they find that the brain waves are similar to folks who are just passive, not paying attention, and daydreaming.They're called BADE ALPHA WAVES...and so, in that state, it's similar to the state of your mind when you're hypnotized.  If they were to put that same EEG on your brain while you were being hypnotized, it would have the same kind of wave. TELEVISION HAS A HYPNOTIC EFFECT.

Q: WHAT DOES THE PROPHET SAY ABOUT HYPNOTISM?
When dealing with anyone with an addiction, they need to be on a Television fast.
TELEVISION DOES NOT DEVELOP THE FRONTAL LOBE, ESPECIALLY ENTERTAINMENT TV.

The World is starting to say well The Bible says already “I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes.” (Psalms 101:3)

When dealing with young people who are having problems, the parents need to be told, which is the most difficult thing, “take your child off of entertainment TV”.  A fight ensues in the home, but if they're successful, they'll see a difference, because entertainment TV is not only about the content of what they are watching, but they're not exercising their brain.

To show you how much violence and all of that can affect the brain, in Loma Linda, they had a gang member come in, and for some reason, they were prodding this gang member's brain, for some reason.  The people were prodding the frontal lobe, and the gang member couldn't even feel it. You know what that means? The frontal lobe was not only numb in terms of mentally, but actually physically, that frontal lobe was numb.  He couldn't feel anythingAnd if the frontal lobe is there to do all of these activities, and it's numb, that's why it's easy for them to come up and go “pop” with a gun.

Q:  YOU KNOW WHAT ELSE NUMBS THAT FRONTAL LOBE?
BOOM, BOOM, BOOM, BOOM...When they're driving down the streets and you hear those heavy beats? That BOOM, BOOM, BOOM IMPACTS THE FRONTAL LOBE IN MANY DIFFERENT WAYS.  So when dealing with young people on Ritalin, have the parents play classical music.  That exercises the frontal lobe.  Research has shown that.
