Water and Bathing

“…Water treatments are not appreciated as they should beand to apply them skillfully requires work that many are unwilling to performBut none should feel excused for ignorance or indifference on this subjectall should become intelligent in its use…” {MH 237.2}

“…Water treatments, wisely and skillfully given...”  {MM 227.1}

“…Let diligent study be united with careful treatments…” {MM 227.2}

INCORRECT WAYS OF BATHING:
  • Invalids have frequently used water injudiciously, especially if they are extremists.
  • They may not have a correct knowledge of the use of water.
  • They may have used the water too warm, and not reduced the bath sufficiently with cold, to tone up the pores of the skin, which has a debilitating influence upon the system, or
  • They may have used the water too cold, and driven the blood from the surface to the internal organs, producing congestion.
  • They may have exposed themselves to cold air immediately after bathing. I have known persons to take cold, from which they have never recovered, by
  • Sitting in a room without a fire and becoming thoroughly chilled immediately after taking a bath. Many are not benefited by taking baths, because
  • They do not practice lying down after a bath and giving nature time to react.
  • If they cannot rest at least half an hour after a bath, they should exercise by walking or working to keep from a sense of chilliness, in order for reaction.

Those who have taken baths carelessly, and have suffered in consequence, receive the impression that it was the bath which injured them, when it was their own injudicious management that produced the bad results.”  {HR, June 1, 1872 par. 15}

She mentions a lot about "warm, cold, and cool" baths.

Hot baths may be used at times as well, but they must have cold rags around their heads, necks, drink water, and not be in for a long time.

Basel, March 30.

Our stay at Geneva was short as A SEVERE COLD CAME UPON ME, making it necessary for me in order to avoid exposure to return to Basel at once.

On my birthday I went to the Sanitarium where I have two rooms to myself, Sarah a room by herself, and W. C. White two rooms for himself. We have every attention and convenience. I HAVE TAKEN BATHS HOT and THEN TONED UP WITH COLD WATER.” 16LtMs, Lt 227, 1901, par. 10

TOOK TWO VERY HOT BATHS in Geneva at the bathhouse which was just across the road from Brother Bourdeau's. I am improving now. Geneva is considered the most wealthy and beautiful place in Switzerland. We saw Mount Blanc from here, rising grand and cold among the mountains. From the one mountain alone water comes from the eternal snows enough to keep or feed the whole Mediterranean. I shall visit these places all again if the Lord will.”  4LtMs, Lt 96, 1886, par. 5
