AND PLACE TO BE CONSIDERED
“Regarding the testimonies, nothing is ignored; nothing is cast aside; but time and place must be considered…” {1SM 57.2}
SOP NOT AN ADDITION TO THE WORD OF GOD
“Brother J would confuse the mind by seeking to make it appear that the light God has given through the testimonies is an addition to the word of God, but in this he presents the matter in a false light…” {4T 245.3}
THE WRITINGS WILL SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES AFTER SHE DIES
“Abundant light has been given to our people in these last days. Whether or not my life is spared, my writings will constantly speak, and their work will go forward as long as time shall last. My writings are kept on file in the office, and even though I should not live, these words that have been given to me by the Lord will still have life and will speak to the people…” {1SM 55.5}
SHE SURROUNDED THE BIBLE WITH THEM AND SAID THEY WILL
TAKE GOD’S PEOPLE THROUGH TO THE END
“I took the precious Bible and surrounded it with the several Testimonies for the Church, given for the people of God. Here, said I, the cases of nearly all are met. The sins they are to shun are pointed out. The counsel that they desire can be found here, given for other cases situated similarly to themselves. God has been pleased to give you line upon line and precept upon precept.” {CCh 92.4}
WE WILL BE ACCOUNTABLE FOR NOT KNOWING WHAT IS IN THEM
“…The enemy is on our track. We must be wide awake, on our guard against him. We must put on the whole armor of God. We must follow the directions given through the spirit of prophecy. We must love and obey the truth for this time. This will save us from accepting strong delusions. God has spoken to us through his word. He has spoken to us through the testimonies to the church and through the books that have helped to make plain our present duty and the position that we should now occupy. The warnings that have been given, line upon line, precept upon precept, should be heeded. If we disregard them, what excuse can we offer? {8T 298.1}
WE ARE TO READ IT EVERY DAY (see Jeremiah 25:4)
“The volumes of the spirit of prophecy, and also the testimonies, should be introduced into every sabbathkeeping family, and the brethren should know their value and be urged to read them. It was not the wisest plan to place these books at a low figure and have only one set in a church. They should be in the library of every family and read again and again. Let them be kept where they can be read by many, and let them be worn out in being read by all the neighbors. {4T 390.3}
“There should be evening readings, in which one should read aloud to those assembled at the winter fireside. There is but little interest manifested to make the most of the light given of God…God has caused precious light to be brought out in publications, and these should be owned and read by every family…” {4T 390.4}
WE ARE NOT TO SAY WHAT IS OPINION AND WHAT IS INSPIRED
“…In no case have I given my own judgment or opinion. I have enough to write of what has been shown me, without falling back on my own opinions…” {3SM 70.1}
A CERTAIN CLASS WILL SAY SOME OF SISTER WHITE’SWRITINGS
ARE INSPIRED AND SOME ARE NOT:
“Many times in my experience I have been called upon to meet the attitude of a certain class, who acknowledged that the testimonies were from God, but took the position that this matter and that matter were Sister White’s opinion and judgment. This suits those who do not love reproof and correction, and who, if their ideas are crossed, have occasion to explain the difference between the human and the divine.” {3SM 68.1}
IF THE PRECONCEIVED OPINIONS OR PARTICULAR IDEAS OF SOME ARE CROSSED IN BEING REPROVED BY TESTIMONIES, THEY HAVE A BURDEN AT ONCE TO MAKE PLAIN THEIR POSITION TO DISCRIMINATE BETWEEN THE TESTIMONIES, DEFINING WHAT IS SISTER WHITE’S JUDGMENT, AND WHAT IS THE WORD OF THE LORD. Everything that sustains their cherished ideas is divine, and the testimonies to correct their errors are human--Sister White's opinions. They make of none effect the counsel of God…” {3SM 68.2}
“The very last deception of Satan will be to make of none effect the testimony of the spirit of God…” {1SM 48.3}
“…Those who have stood directly in the way of the people, having a clear realization of their perilous condition, will have an account to settle with God. Those who have helped souls to feel at liberty to specify what is of god in the testimonies, and what are the uninspired words of sister white, will find that they were helping the devil in his work of deception.” (Or, Testimonies, Vol. 5, p. 683).
THE TESTIMONIES WILL SAVE US FROM ACCEPTING STRONG
DELUSION
“Men may get up scheme after scheme, and the enemy will seek to seduce souls from the truth, but all who believe that the Lord has spoken through Sister White, and has given her a message, will be safe from the many delusions that will come in these last days.” 1906 {3SM 83.5} (see Ephesians 4:11-14)
HOLY SPIRIT IS THE AUTHOR OF THE SOP THEREFORE WE ARE TO
STUDY THE SAME WAY WE STUDY OUR BIBLE
“Scripture and Spirit of Prophecy Have Same Author.—THE HOLY GHOST IS THE AUTHOR OF THE SCRIPTURES AND OF THE SPIRIT OF PROPHECY…” {3SM 30.3} 1900
SHE IS NOT THE ORIGINATOR OF THESE BOOKS
“Sister White is not the originator of these books. They contain the instruction that during her lifework god has been giving her. They contain the precious, comforting light that god has graciously given his servant to be given to the world...” {CM 125.1} 1903
IT IS THE WORD OF GOD
“…Will you heed what the lord has spoken through Sister White, or will you cast the word of the Lord behind you?...” {2SM 82.1}
LESSER LIGHT TO BRING US TO GREATER LIGHT
What does this mean?
“…Little heed is given to the
Bible, and the Lord has given a lesser light to lead men and women to the
greater light (see Genesis 1:16 and Revelation
12:1) …” {YRP 232.4}
“THE PROPHET JOHN was the connecting link between the two dispensations. As God's representative he stood forth to show the relation of the law and the prophets to the Christian dispensation. He was the lesser light, which was to be followed by a greater. The mind of John was illuminated by the Holy Spirit, that he might shed light upon his people…” {DA 220.2}
SHE HAS A GREATER WORK THAN A PROPHET
During the discourse, I said that I DID NOT CLAIM TO BE A PROPHETESS. Some were surprised at this statement, and as much is being said in regard to it, I will make an explanation. Others have called me a prophetess, but I have never assumed that title. I have not felt that it was my duty thus to designate myself. Those who boldly assume that they are prophets in this our day are often a reproach to the cause of Christ. {1SM 35.6}
My work includes much more than this name signifies. I regard myself as a messenger, entrusted by the lord with messages for his people.” {1SM 36.1} 1905
THEY ARE NOT TO BE READ OUT OF CONTEXT
“…I know that men take the testimonies the Lord has given, and apply them as they suppose they should be applied, picking out a sentence here and there, taking it from its proper connection, and applying it according to their idea. Thus poor souls become bewildered, when could they read in order all that has been given, they would see the true application, and would not become confused…” {1SM 44.3} 1901
“…There are many things that must come into consideration; for in using the testimonies to bolster up some subject which may impress the mind of the author, the extracts may give a different impression than that which they would were they read in their original connection.” {1SM 58.3}
GIVEN TO MAKE WORD OF GOD CLEAR
“…The Lord has given special testimonies to his people, not as a new revelation, but that he may set before us the plain lessons of his word, that errors may be corrected, that the right way may be pointed out, that every soul may be without excuse.” {3SM 31.3} 1893
WHAT ABOUT THOSE WHO SAY THE BIBLE, AND THE BIBLE ONLY?
“The enemy has made his masterly efforts to unsettle the faith of our own people in the testimonies, and when these errors come in they claim to prove all the positions by the bible, but they misrepresent scriptures...” {3SM 83.3}
TESTIMONIES EXPLAIN THEMSELVES
Is the final word the
Testimony of Jesus
“The testimonies themselves will be the key that will explain the messages given, as scripture is explained by scripture…” {1SM 42.2}
NOT A SMOOTH MESSAGE
“In my last vision I was shown that even THIS DECIDED MESSAGE OF THE TRUE WITNESS had not accomplished the design of God. The people slumber on in their sins. They continue to declare themselves rich and having need of nothing. Many inquire: Why are all these reproofs given? Why do the Testimonies continually charge us with backsliding and with grievous sins? We love the truth; we are prospering; we are in no need of these testimonies of warning and reproof…” {3T 254.2}
“…Many have despised the reproofs and warnings given them. The true witness condemns the lukewarm condition of the people of God…” {3T 255.1}
“The testimony of the true witness is not a smooth message… {RH, September 16, 1873 par. 18}
IF PEOPLE CAN’T
HANDLE THE STRAIGHT TESTIMONY
“If those who have been in the church for weeks and months have not learned the straightness of the way, and what it is to be Christians, and cannot hear all the straight truths of the word of God, it were better that they were cut off from Israel. It is too late in the day to feed with milk. If souls a month or two old in the truth, who are about to enter the time of trouble such as never was, cannot hear all the straight truth, or endure the strong meat of the straightness of the way, how will they stand in the day of battle?” 1MR 33.4}
SOME ONLY GO SO FAR IN THESE TESTIMONIES
“God will prove his people. Jesus bears patiently with them and does not spew them out of his mouth in a moment… {1T 186.2}
God leads his people on, step by step. He brings them up to different points calculated to manifest what is in the hearts. Some endure at one point, but fall off at the next. At every advanced point the heart is tested and tried a little closer. If the professed people of God find their hearts opposed to this straight work, it should convince them that they have a work to do to overcome, if they would not be spewed out of the mouth of the Lord. Said the angel: "God will bring his work closer and closer to test and prove every one of his people." some are willing to receive one point; but when God brings them to another testing point they shrink from it and stand back, because they find that it strikes directly at some cherished idol. Here they have opportunity to see what is in their hearts that shuts out Jesus. They prize something higher than the truth, and their hearts are not prepared to receive Jesus. Individuals are tested and proved a length of time to see if they will sacrifice their idols and heed the counsel of the true witness. If any will not be purified through obeying the truth, and overcome their selfishness, their pride, and evil passions, the angels of God have the charge: "They are joined to their idols, let them alone," and they pass on to their work, leaving these with their sinful traits unsubdued, to the control of evil angels. Those who come up to every point, and stand every test, and overcome, be the price what it may, have heeded the counsel of the true witness, and they will receive the latter rain, and thus be fitted for translation...” {1T 187.1}
HEAVEN IS CHEAP ENOUGH
“When sinful man can discern the inexpressible love of God in giving his son to die upon the cross, we shall better understand that it is infinite gain to overcome as Christ overcame. And we shall understand that it is eternal loss if we gain the whole world, with all its pleasure and glory, and yet lose the soul. Heaven is cheap enough at any cost…” {RH, March 18, 1875 par. 7}
