Are You A Medical Missionary?

“God has made plain to me the various ways in which He would use me TO CARRY FORWARD A SPECIAL WORK.” {1SM 33 .1}

“I wish to tell you that soon there will be NO WORK DONE in ministerial lines BUT MEDICAL MISSIONARY WORK.”  {CH 533 .1}

WHO IS TO DO THIS WORK?

“We have come to a time when EVERY MEMBER of the church should take hold of medical missionary work.”   {7T 62.1}

“And at the close of His earthly ministry, when He charged His disciples with a solemn commission to GO “INTO ALL THE WORLD, and preach the gospel to every creature,” He declared that their ministry would receive confirmation through the restoration of the sick to health. The Saviour's commission to the disciples includes all believers to the end of time.”  (CT 466.1, 2)

WHY?

“The work of educating in medical missionary lines is an advance step of great importance in awakening man to his moral responsibilities.”  {6T 377 .1}

“The medical missionary work given us to do...is a work of soul saving; it is the proclamation of the gospel message.” {CH 320 .3}

“We are to be workers together with God for the restoration of health to the body as well as to the soul.”

“He ever worked to relieve suffering and teach righteousness. Only by this can sinners be raised from the depths of degradation.”  {8T 73.2}

WHEN IS IT TO BE DONE?

“GOSPEL MEDICAL MISSIONARIES--ARE NEEDED NOW. You cannot afford to spend years in preparation. Soon doors now open to the truth will be forever closed. Carry the message now. Do not wait, allowing the enemy to take possession of the fields now open before you...” {9T 172 .4}

“The purest example of unselfishness is now to be shown by our medical missionary workers...”  {CH 538 .2}

“Workers are needed now. As a people, we are not doing one fiftieth of what we might do as active missionaries. If we were vitalized by the Holy Spirit, there would be one hundred missionaries where there is now one. But where are the missionaries? Has not the truth for this time power to stir the souls of those who claim to believe it? When there is a call to labor, why should there be so many voices to say, “I pray thee, have me excused?” In this country, the standard of truth is to be established and exalted. There is great need of workers...” {CH 507 .1}

WHERE IS THIS WORK TO BE DONE?

“If the medical missionary workers will carry this line of effort into the churches everywhere, if they will work in the fear of God, they will find many doors opened before them, and angels will work with them.” {8T 72 .1}

“From the instruction that the Lord has given me from time to time, I know that there should be workers who make medical evangelistic tours among the towns and villages...” {9T 172 .1}

“It is medical missionaries that are needed all through the field. Canvassers should improve every opportunity granted them to learn how to treat disease...” {MM 249 .2}

“And as they “went through the towns, preaching the gospel, and healing everywhere.” (Luke 9:6)

HOW IS THIS WORK TO BE DONE?

“In connection with my husband, I was to be a medical missionary worker. I was to set an example to the church by taking the sick to my home and caring for them. This I have done, giving the women and children vigorous treatment. I was also to speak on the subject of Christian temperance...I engaged heartily in this work, and spoke to large assemblies...”  {1SM 33 .2}

“...Let little companies go forth to do the work to which Christ appointed his disciples...let them pray for the sick, ministering to their necessities, NOT WITH DRUGS, but with nature's remedies, and teaching them how to regain health and avoid disease.”  {9T 172 .4}

“The workers should go forth two by two, that they may pray and consult together. NEVER should they be sent out ALONE. The lord Jesus Christ sent forth his disciples two and two into all the cities of Israel. He gave them the commission, “heal the sick that are therein, and say unto them, the kingdom of God is come nigh unto you.” {MM 249.2}

“Our medical missionary workers. With the knowledge and experience gained by practical work, they are to go out to give treatments to the sick. As they GO FROM HOUSE TO HOUSE, they will find access to many hearts. MANY will be reached who otherwise would never have heard the gospel message.” {CH 538 .2}

“Visiting the sick, comforting the poor and the sorrowful for Christ's sake...”  Letter 43, 1895. {MM 252 .1}

“The great medical missionary sees every effort that is made to find access to souls by presenting the principles of health reform.” {CH 538 .4}

EVERY EFFORT WOULD INCLUDE EMERGENCY SITUATIONS. ARE WE PREPARED FOR THESE?

“...First thing they must do is to make themselves practical, all-round useful men and women, who in an emergency can do the work necessary to be done.”  (SpMag 54.6)

“To those who go out to do medical missionary work, I would say, serve the lord Jesus Christ with sanctified understanding, in connection with the ministers of the gospel and the great teacher. He who has given you your commission will give you skill and understanding as you consecrate yourselves to His service, engaging diligently in labor and study, doing your best to bring relief to the sick and suffering.” {CH 539.2

TO GO OUT AND BE TRAINED BY MINISTERS IN GOSPEL LINES:

“Young men who have a practical knowledge of how to treat the sick are now to be sent out to do gospel medical missionary work, in connection with more experienced gospel workers. If these young men will give themselves to the study of the word, they will become successful evangelists. The ministers with whom these young men labor are to give them the same opportunity to learn that Elijah gave Elisha. They are to show them how to teach the truth to others. Where it is possible, these young men should VISIT THE HOSPITALS...”  {CH 538 .1}

“He gave them power to heal the sick and to cast out devils in His name. The two lines of work must not be separated...the medical missionary work is to be connected with the third angel's message as the hand is connected with the body; and the education of students in medical missionary lines is NOT COMPLETE unless they are trained to work in connection with the church and the ministry.”  {CH 557.1}

WHAT THIS WORK WILL DO FOR GOD'S PEOPLE?

“The world is a lazar house filled with victims of both physical and spiritual disease. Everywhere people are perishing for lack of a knowledge of the truths that have been committed to us. The members of the church are in need of an awakening, that they may realize their responsibility to impart these truths. Those who have been enlightened by the truth are to be light bearers to the world. To hide our light at this time is to make a terrible mistake. The message to God's people today is: “Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee.” {7T 62 .1}

Q: HOW DOES OURS SHINE?

A: Isaiah 58:6-8:

58:6 – Is not this the fast that I have chosen? To loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke?

58:7 – Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh?

58:8 – Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily: and thy righteousness shall go before thee; the glory of the LORD shall be thy rereward.

“Visiting the sick, comforting the poor and the sorrowful for Christ's sake, will bring to the workers the bright beams of the sun of righteousness, and even the countenance will express the peace that dwells in the soul...”  --Letter 43, 1895. {MM 252 .1}

“There is a great work to be done. Are you doing all you can to help? God has given us a commission which angels might envy. Medical missionary work is to be done. Thousands upon thousands of human beings are perishing. The compassion of God is moved. All heaven is looking on with intense interest to see what stamp medical missionary work will assume...”  {MM 131 .2)

“Let our people show that they have a live interest in medical missionary work. Let them prepare themselves for usefulness by studying the literature that has been prepared for our instruction on these subjects...An understanding of the philosophy of health is a safeguard against many of the evils that are continually increasing.”  {CT 138 .1}

A CALL FOR GOSPEL MEDICAL MISSIONARIES:

“When Jesus sent forth the Twelve on their first mission of mercy, He commissioned them “to preach the kingdom of God, and to HEAL THE SICK.” Luke 9:2. “As ye go,” He said, “preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand. Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give.” Matthew 10:7, 8. And as they “went through the towns, preaching the gospel, and healing everywhere” (Luke 9:6), the blessing of heaven accompanied their labors. The fulfillment of the Saviour's commission by the disciples made their message the power of God unto salvation, and through their efforts many were brought to a knowledge of the Messiah.” {CT 465 .1}

“The Seventy who were sent out a little later were also commissioned to “heal the sick” (Luke 10:9) as well as to announce the advent of the promised Redeemer. In their work of teaching and healing, the disciples followed the example of the Master Teacher, who ministered to both soul and body. The gospel which He taught was a message of spiritual life and physical restoration. Deliverance from sin and the healing of disease were linked together.”  {CT 465 .2}

“When the Lord moves upon the churches, bidding them do a certain work, and they refuse to do that work; and when some, their human efforts united with the divine, endeavor to reach to the very depths of human woe and misery, God's blessing will rest richly upon them. Even though but few accept the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, their work will not be in vain; for one soul is precious, very precious, in the sight of God. Christ would have died for one soul in order that that one might live through the eternal ages.” {8T 72 .3}

“Angels of God will co-operate with those who are engaged in this work, who make every effort to save perishing souls...He ever worked to relieve suffering and teach righteousness. Only by this can sinners be raised from the depths of degradation.”  {8T 73.2}
