HEALTH NEWS ~ AUGUST

Happy August! :)

I can hardly believe summer is almost gone and fall is around the corner.  Here is a great recipe to try while summer is still here and all the fresh fruit is still available.

Fruit Salad

Fresh fruit of choice, but here are some ideas:

Apples
Bananas
Blueberries
Cantaloupe
Grapes
Honeydew
Kiwi
Orange
Papaya
Pineapple
Raspberries
Strawberries

Cut up fruit and place in bowl.  Add whipped topping and mix with a big spoon and chill.  Serve with toast or popcorn and enjoy!

Whipped Topping
1 cup water
2 T. agar flakes (2 t. powder)
½ c. raw cashews
⅓ c. honey
½ t. salt
1 can coconut milk

Stir together the agar and water, and bring to a boil, stirring constantly. Reduce heat and simmer for 1-2 minutes.

Place remaining ingredients in blender along with hot agar mixture.  Blend on high until smooth, adding water as needed to make 3½ -4 cups total mixture. Pour into a quart container and chill in refrigerator several hours or overnight.

Before using, place chilled mixture (which will be quite firm---almost sliceable) in blender or food processor, and blend until creamy. (If you have a lightweight blender, you should blend just half of the mix at a time.)  It should be the consistency of Cool Whip. Try not to add more liquid.  The mixture will eventually go through the blades and become creamy if you carefully push it toward the blades with a rubber spatula.

The agar is a key ingredient in this recipe.  The mixture has to be re-blended only once.  Then it can be frozen and used without re-blending, but remains a nice creamy texture.  So make a double recipe and freeze in small containers to use as needed for icing, dessert topping or pancakes. Makes 6 cups.

It would be well for us to do less cooking and to eat more fruit in its natural state. Let us teach the people to eat freely of the fresh grapes, apples, peaches, pears, berries, and all other kinds of fruit that can be obtained. 7T 134

Fruit is so good for us, we need to be sure to eat it every day and a variety.  Did you know that…?

The pomegranate is referred to in 11 Old Testament books. This shows the importance of this fruit.

In Exodus 28:33 we read that the hem of the high priest’s robe was embroidered with pomegranates. Pomegranates were used to ornament the pillars in King Solomon’s Temple (1 Kings 7:20). The spies who went to explore the land of Canaan returned with a single cluster of grapes so large that two men had to carry it on a pole. They also had some pomegranates and figs to prove that the land was fertile (Num. 13:23). Yes, the pomegran - ates grew in abundance in Canaan. So the pomegranate is a special fruit!

KIWI: Tiny but mighty. This is a good source of potassium, magnesium, vitamin E & fiber. Its vitamin C content is twice that of an orange.

APPLE: An apple a day keeps the doctor away? Although an apple has a low vitamin C content, it has antioxidants & flavonoids which enhances the activity of vitamin C thereby helping to lower the risks of colon cancer, heart attack & stroke.

STRAWBERRY: Protective Fruit. Strawberries have the highest total antioxidant power among major fruits & protect the body from cancer-causing, blood vessel-clogging free radicals.

ORANGE: Sweetest medicine. Eating 2-4 oranges a day may help keep colds away, lower cholesterol, prevent & dissolve kidney stones as well as lessens the risk of colon cancer.

WATERMELON: Coolest thirst quencher...Composed of 92% water; it is also packed with a giant dose of glutathione, which helps boost our immune system. They are also a key source of lycopene - the cancer fighting oxidant. Other nutrients found in watermelon are vitamin C & Potassium.

GUAVA & PAPAYA: Top awards for vitamin C. They are the clear winners for their high vitamin C content. Guava is also rich in fiber, which helps prevent constipation. Papaya is rich in carotene; this is good for your eyes.

BANANAS: Contain three natural sugars - sucrose, fructose and glucose combined with fiber. A banana gives an instant, sustained and substantial boost of energy.

Research has proven that just two bananas provide enough energy for a strenuous 90-minute workout. No wonder the banana is the number one fruit with the world's leading athletes.

But energy isn't the only way a banana can help us keep fit. It can also help overcome or prevent a substantial n umber of illnesses and conditions, making it a must to add to our daily diet.

A banana really is a natural remedy for many ills. When you compare it to an apple, it has four times the protein, twice the carbohydrate, three times the phosphorus, five times the vitamin A and iron, and twice the other vitamins and minerals. It is also rich in potassium and is one
of the best value foods around; so maybe its time to change that well-known phrase so that we say, "A banana a day keeps the doctor away!"

PS: Bananas must be the reason monkeys are so happy all the time!

I will add one here; want a quick shine on our shoes?? Take the INSIDE of the banana skin, and rub directly on the shoe...polish with dry cloth. Amazing fruit!

In the New York Times science section (July 17, 2007, page 6) it says:

"People who choose organic fruits and vegetables to avoid pesticides and other chemicals may have another reason to buy organic. A new study finds that organically grown tomatoes have higher levels of flavonoids, which may protect against cardiovascular disease."

“I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.”  Romans 12:1

Let’s present our bodies a living sacrifice by eating to the glory of God. We need to have clear minds to hear the Holy Spirit talking to us and to have healthy bodies to do His will and get the work done so we can go home to heaven!

HEALTH NEWS ~ JULY

Eating healthy is my passion and I love to collect and try new recipes.  I have over 4000 recipes on my digital “cookbook" (which is for sale if interested). Eating healthy doesn’t mean the food has to taste bad.  The recipe for this month is Alfredo. It is simple, easy and very tasty.

Creamy Alfredo Sauce
½ c. raw cashews
1 ¼ c. water
1 T. unbleached white flour
¼ t. onion powder
½ t. real salt
1 T. chicken seasoning, vegan and homemade (if you need a recipe let me know)
1 t. basil, dried NOT FRESH

Blend cashews, flour, seasoning, onion powder, salt and water until creamy.  Pour blended mixture into saucepan and bring to a slow boil.  Add basil and remove from heat.  Ladle over cooked fettuccine noodles and serve with steamed broccoli pieces and a fresh salad.

God wants us to be healthy.  In 3 John 2 it says, “Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers."

Isn’t that wonderful?  God wants us to be in good health. He does not want us to be sick and that is why He gave us such wonderful counsel on how to eat, when to eat and what to eat.

What we eat really does affect our health and moral strength and our usefulness in this world.

Actually we are told just that in our inspired writings of Ellen White. She says the following in Child Guidance on page 398. “True temperance teaches us to dispense entirely with everything hurtful, and to use judiciously that which is healthful.  There are few who realize as they should how much their habits of diet have to do with their health, their character, their usefulness in this world, and their eternal Destiny. The appetite should ever be in subjection to the moral and intellectual powers.  The body should be servant to the mind, and not the mind to the body.”

“…Disease is an effort of nature to free the system from conditions that result from a violation of the laws of health. In case of sickness, the cause should be ascertained. Unhealthful conditions should be changed, wrong habits corrected. Then nature is to be assisted in her effort to expel impurities and to re-establish right conditions in the system. Pure air, sunlight, abstemiousness, rest, exercise, PROPER DIET, the use of water, trust in divine power--these are the true remedies. Every person should have a knowledge of nature's remedial agencies and how to apply them. It is essential both to understand the principles involved in the treatment of the sick and to have a practical training that will enable one rightly to use this knowledge.” {MH 127.1-.2}

…EDUCATION SHOULD BE GIVEN ON PROPER DIET…” (CD 406.4)

We should educate ourselves, not only to live in harmony with the laws of health, but to teach others the better way…” (CG 361.2)

“…become more intelligent in regard to the laws of life. . . {11MR 187.3}

EDUCATE IN REGARD TO THE LAWS OF LIFE:
“…Educate people in regard to the laws of life…” {GCDB, January 30, 1893 par. 2}

Interesting Fact: Because of crowded, dirty conditions, more than 80% of the pigs bred in the U.S. have contracted pneumonia by the time they are slaughtered.

Researchers found that people who eat the most processed meats (bacon, ham, bologna etc.) have a 68% higher risk of pancreatic cancer than those who eat the least of those meats.

Meat is just not safe to eat anymore. Have you ever read what the Bible and inspiration says about it?  There is so much, I don’t know what to leave out, but here are some very good quotes that spoke to my heart.

If you read Genesis 5:5, 5:8, 5:11, 5:14 and 9:29 you will see that the life of the race BEFORE the flood was that man lived much longer.

The life span was drastically shortened after the flood when man was permitted to eat meat. Genesis 11:10-32, 25:7, 35:28, 47:28, and 50:26

One more significant change was recorded after the flood in Gen 11:28 and that was a child died before a parent.

Did you know there was a stipulation given to man when eating meat? Lev 3:17, 7: 26, 27 & 17:10-14…it says NO FAT or BLOOD!

Do you know that God ONLY gave permission to eat animal food to shorten their sinful lives?
CD 373.

“Flesh meat creates disease and insubordination.”  CD 375

“Vegetables, fruits and grains should compose our diet.  Not an ounce of flesh meat should enter our stomachs. The eating of flesh is unnatural.”  CD 380

“Our habits of eating and drinking show whether we are of the world or among the number whom the Lord by His mighty cleaver of truth has separated from the world.  These are His peculiar people, zealous of good works.” CD 379

“God gave rebellious Israel flesh, but His curse was with it.  Thousands of them died while the meat they desired was between their teeth.  We have the warning for us NOT to do as they did.”   CD 379

“How can those who are seeking to become pure, refined, and holy, that they may have the companionship of heavenly angels, continue to use as food anything that has so harmful and effect on soul and body?” CD 380

“Among those who are waiting for the coming of the Lord, meat eating will eventually be done away; flesh will cease to form a part of their diet.”  CD 380-381

Some of the most popular meats have been tested and rejected by failing to meet minimum health standards.  Consumer Reports magazine made an extensive research on hamburgers and gave the results in August, 1971.  “A shocking large percentage of the hamburger we purchased was well on the way to putrefaction.”

Ralph Nader, whose organization did a prolonged investigation of packing houses, summed up their findings on hamburgers and hot dogs in the Florida magazine November 7, 1971:

“All these processed meats constitute an imaginative food innovation; they are often used as a handy and profitable dump that allows the packers to get rid of their scraps, substandard or diseased meat, and their less desirable cuts.  All they do is douse all these inferior leftovers with coloring and seasoning agents, and market them to an unsuspecting public.

Court evidence has shown that contaminated meat, horse meat, and meat from diseased animals that was originally slated for dog or cat food has often wound up as hamburger or sausage; while lungs, eyeballs, pig blood and chopped hides are mixed into hot dogs and luncheon meats.

“To reduce the stench and foul taste, such meat is frequently impregnated with sulfite, an illegal additive that gives old decaying meat a healthy pink blush.  Since the meat used is often filthy, detergents are frequently used to wash off the dirt, and to stretch profits, so-called binders are added to hold the shreds of meat together---generally cereals, but occasionally sawdust.”

If that was 1971 it must be worse now….and I sure don’t want to be eating sulfite, detergents and sawdust! Do you?

“A diet of flesh meat tends to develop animalism …animalism lessens spirituality, rendering the mind incapable of understanding truth.”  CD 381

“Those who use flesh meat disregard all the warnings that God has given concerning this question. They have not the slightest excuse for eating the flesh of dead animals. Many times when meat is eaten, it decays in the stomach, and creates disease. Cancers, tumors, and pulmonary diseases are largely caused by meat eating.” CD 383

“When will those who know the truth take their stand on the side of right principles for time and for eternity? When will they be true to the principles of health reform? When will they learn that it is dangerous to use flesh meat? I am instructed to say that if ever meat eating were safe, it is not safe now.” CD 384

“Cancers, tumors, and all inflammatory diseases are largely caused by meat eating.” CD 388

“The meat diet is the serious question. Shall human beings live on the flesh of dead animals? The answer, from the light that God has given is, No, decidedly No.” CD 388

“It is impossible for those who make free use of flesh meats to have an unclouded brain and an active intellect.’ CD 389

The intellectual, the moral, and the physical powers are depreciated by the habitual use of flesh meats. Meat eating deranges the system, beclouds the intellect, and blunts the moral sensibilities. We say to you, dear brother and sister, your safest course is to let meat alone.”  CD 391

“Meat is not essential for health or strength…All the elements of nutrition are contained in the fruits, vegetables, and grains.” CD 395

“The liability to take disease is increased tenfold by meat eating.”  CD 386

“There are those among Seventh-day Adventists who will not heed the light given them in regard to this matter. They make flesh meat a part of their diet. Disease comes upon them. Sick and suffering as a result of their own wrong course, they ask for the prayers of the servants of God. But how can the Lord work in their behalf when they are not willing to do His will, when they refuse to heed His instruction in regard to health reform?” CD 400

“Flesh foods are injurious to the physical well-being, and we should learn to do without them. Those who are in a position where it is possible to secure a vegetarian diet, but who choose to follow their own preferences in this matter, eating and drinking as they please, will gradually grow careless of the instruction the Lord has given regarding other phases of the present truth, and will lose their perception of what is truth; they will surely reap as they have sown.” CD 402

...dead carcasses should always be looked upon as not fit to compose the diet of Christians.” CD 414

There is so much in the SOP for us to read and learn its amazing….God really does want us to change our diets and go back to the original one He gave us in the beginning.

In the light of so much counsel on the subject, how can we explain why almost half of our people still feed on the dead bodies of animals?

Do you know what the definition of food is?  It is things that give the body nutrition by the same time NOT causing harm.  Let’s eat real food then and not cause harm to our body that God gave us.

Let’s be the peculiar people we were called to be and live the truth we have been given by God.  May God bless you as you improve your diet and health so you can hear the Holy Spirit speaking to you!

Thank you God for healthy foods and a country that freely supplies them!

The Benefits of Figs

3 John 2 - "Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as they soul prospereth."

"Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God." (Matthew 4:4)

"Every person should have a knowledge of nature's remedial agencies and how to apply them. It is essential both to understand the principles involved in the treatment of the sick and to have a practical training that will enable one rightly to use this knowledge." {MH 127 .2}

Bible Examples for Healing:
1st Example: 2 Kings 4: 9-36
9 And she said unto her husband, Behold now, I perceive that this is an holy man of God, which passeth by us continually.

10 Let us make a little chamber, I pray thee, on the wall; and let us set for him there a bed, and a table, and a stool, and a candlestick: and it shall be, when he cometh to us, that he shall turn in thither.

11 And it fell on a day, that he came thither, and he turned into the chamber, and lay there.

12 And he said to Gehazi his servant, Call this Shunammite. And when he had called her, she stood before him.

13 And he said unto him, Say now unto her, Behold, thou hast been careful for us with all this care; what is to be done for thee? wouldest thou be spoken for to the king, or to the captain of the host? And she answered, I dwell among mine own people.

14 And he said, What then is to be done for her? And Gehazi answered, Verily she hath no child, and her husband is old.

15 And he said, Call her. And when he had called her, she stood in the door.

16 And he said, About this season, according to the time of life, thou shalt embrace a son. And she said, Nay, my lord, thou man of God, do not lie unto thine handmaid.

17 And the woman conceived, and bare a son at that season that Elisha had said unto her, according to the time of life.

18 And when the child was grown, it fell on a day, that he went out to his father to the reapers.

19 And he said unto his father, My head, my head. And he said to a lad, Carry him to his mother.

20 And when he had taken him, and brought him to his mother, he sat on her knees till noon, and then died.

21 And she went up, and laid him on the bed of the man of God, and shut the door upon him, and went out.

22 And she called unto her husband, and said, Send me, I pray thee, one of the young men, and one of the asses, that I may run to the man of God, and come again.

23 And he said, Wherefore wilt thou go to him today? it is neither new moon, nor sabbath. And she said, It shall be well.

24 Then she saddled an ass, and said to her servant, Drive, and go forward; slack not thy riding for me, except I bid thee.

25 So she went and came unto the man of God to mount Carmel. And it came to pass, when the man of God saw her afar off, that he said to Gehazi his servant, Behold, yonder is that Shunammite:

26 Run now, I pray thee, to meet her, and say unto her, Is it well with thee? is it well with thy husband? is it well with the child? And she answered, It is well:

27 And when she came to the man of God to the hill, she caught him by the feet: but Gehazi came near to thrust her away. And the man of God said, Let her alone; for her soul is vexed within her: and the LORD hath hid it from me, and hath not told me.

28 Then she said, Did I desire a son of my lord? did I not say, Do not deceive me?

29 Then he said to Gehazi, Gird up thy loins, and take my staff in thine hand, and go thy way: if thou meet any man, salute him not; and if any salute thee, answer him not again: and lay my staff upon the face of the child.

30 And the mother of the child said, As the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. And he arose, and followed her.

31 And Gehazi passed on before them, and laid the staff upon the face of the child; but there was neither voice, nor hearing. Wherefore he went again to meet him, and told him, saying, The child is not awaked.

32 And when Elisha was come into the house, behold, the child was dead, and laid upon his bed.33 He went in therefore, and shut the door upon them twain, and prayed unto the LORD.

34 And he went up, and lay upon the child, and put his mouth upon his mouth, and his eyes upon his eyes, and his hands upon his hands: and stretched himself upon the child; and the flesh of the child waxed warm.

35 Then he returned, and walked in the house to and fro; and went up, and stretched himself upon him: and the child sneezed seven times, and the child opened his eyes.

36 And he called Gehazi, and said, Call this Shunammite. So he called her. And when she was come in unto him, he said, Take up thy son.

Q: What would you call what Elisha did for this boy?
A: Mouth to mouth resuscitation

Q: How many of us know how to perform mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and/or CPR?

***If we don't, as Medical Missionaries, it is highly recommended that each one of us get trained in this area. If you can't afford to pay for such a class, you can read The Natural Remedies Encyclopedia on pages 753-757 (4th & 5th Edition); pages 991-999 (7th Edition).

2nd Example: 2 Chronicles 16:
12 And Asa in the thirty and ninth year of his reign was diseased in his feet, until his disease was exceeding great: yet in his disease he sought not to the LORD, but to the physicians.

13 And Asa slept with his fathers, and died in the one and fortieth year of his reign.

2 Kings 20:
1 In those days was Hezekiah sick unto death. And the prophet Isaiah the son of Amoz came to him, and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Set thine house in order; for thou shalt die, and not live.

2 Then he turned his face to the wall, and prayed unto the LORD, saying,

3 I beseech thee, O LORD, remember now how I have walked before thee in truth and with a perfect heart, and have done that which is good in thy sight. And Hezekiah wept sore.

4 And it came to pass, afore Isaiah was gone out into the middle court, that the word of the LORD came to him, saying,

5 Turn again, and tell Hezekiah the captain of my people, Thus saith the LORD, the God of David thy father, I have heard thy prayer, I have seen thy tears: behold, I will heal thee: on the third day thou shalt go up unto the house of the LORD.

6 And I will add unto thy days fifteen years; and I will deliver thee and this city out of the hand of the king of Assyria; and I will defend this city for mine own sake, and for my servant David's sake.

7 And Isaiah said, Take a lump of figs. And they took and laid it on the boil, and he recovered.

Q: What does the Prophet of the Lord say regarding this remedy?
A: A Poultice of Figs for Hezekiah.--When Hezekiah was sick, the prophet of God brought him the message that he should die. The king cried to the Lord, and the Lord heard him, and sent the promise that fifteen years should be added to his life. One word from God, one touch of the divine finger, would have been enough to cure Hezekiah instantly. But instead, he was given directions to make a poultice of figs, and lay it upon the part affected. This was done, and Hezekiah was restored to health. IT WOULD BE WELL TO TREASURE THIS PRESCRIPTION WHICH THE LORD ORDERED TO BE USED, MORE THAN WE DO.  --Manuscript 29, 1911 (General Manuscript). {2SM 300 .1}

Q: Why Figs?
A: Figs apparently have a derivative of benzaldehyde. It has been reported that investigators at the Institute of Physical and Chemical Research in Tokyo say benzaldehyde is highly effective at shrinking tumors, though I haven't seen this report. In addition, the U.S. Department of Agriculture says figs, which contain vitamins A and C, and calcium, magnesium and potassium, may curtail appetite and improve weight-loss efforts. Fig juice is also a potent bacteria killer in test-tube studies.

Other things Figs are good for:
Fighting infection
Bacteria
Lung problems
Skin problems
Warts
Boils
Tumors
Bone problems
Diabetes
High blood pressure
Cardio-vascular problems
Macular degeneration
Much, much more

14 Reasons Why Witch Hazel Should Be In Every Home

1. Natural Astringent
Probably the most famous way witch hazel is used is as a natural astringent. High concentrations of tannins in witch hazel make it an excellent astringent which means it has the ability to remove excess oil from skin and shrink down pores.  Health-wise, those who are exposed to lots of environmental pollutants may apply witch hazel to the face in order to reduce the amount of contaminants that enter pores and, consequently, the amount and severity of blemishes.  Also, because astringents remove excess oil, regular use of witch hazel may further prevent blemishes, especially black heads which result from dried sebum build-up in pores.

2. Fade Bruises and Blemishes
Witch hazel may also be used to treat blemishes already present on the face or other areas of the body.  Apply witch hazel with a cotton ball or cosmetic pad to reduce irritation and appearance of acne or other inflammatory skin conditions.  Witch hazel applied to bruises can also help to fade discoloration and speed up the healing process of any underlying damage.

3. Brighten Around Eyes
The ability of witch hazel to tighten skin and reduce inflammation makes this an ideal natural remedy for treating discoloration and puffiness under and around eyes and is one of the most popular uses for witch hazel.  Just make sure not to get any of this natural astringent on the eyes themselves as it will result in significant pain and lingering discomfort from dryness.

4. Shrink Swollen Veins
Soak soft terry cloth in witch hazel and lay over skin affected by varicose veins to temporarily reduce swelling and pain.  Also, remember to prop up the areas to be treated as high as possible.  This will decrease blood pressure in swollen veins and maximize the effectiveness of your treatment.

5. Stop Bleeding
Witch hazel naturally tightens skin and promotes faster healing.  Apply organic witch hazel to minor cuts and scrapes to stop bleeding.  Store-bought witch hazel also often contains isoproply alcohol which disinfects, making it a popular choice for cleansing wounds before bandaging.

6. Post Hair-removal
For both men and women, witch hazel is a great follow-up to shaving any part of the body.  Not only will it stop bleeding from nicks or cuts, anti-inflammatory witch hazel can also work to prevent razor burn.  Furthermore, those who employ hot wax treatments for hair-removal may also apply witch hazel as an anti-inflammatory post-waxing or use it to stop bleeding from damaged hair follicles.

7. Hemorrhoid Relief
Witch hazel is great for easing the pain, itching, swelling, and bleeding of hemorrhoids.  In fact, it’s a common ingredient used in many commercial hemorrhoid creams.  Just mix witch hazel with a carrier like Aloe Vera gel and apply to affected areas for fast relief.

 8. Ease a Sore Throat
Due to its astringent properties, an herbal tea of witch hazel (not the store-bought kind which almost always contains isopropyl alcohol) can help to ease the discomfort of a sore throat.  Gargle with witch hazel tea to reduce swelling, dry up excess mucus, and ease pain caused by laryngitis, sinusitis, tonsillitis, or other throat maladies.

9. Treat Damaged Gums
A witch hazel mouth rinse (again, don’t use witch hazel that contains isopropyl alcohol) can help to reduce pain and swelling of irritated or infected gums.  Witch hazel can be used stop minor bleeding of the gums and mouth.  Try a teaspoon of witch hazel tea with one drop each clove and myrrh oil to safely relieve teething pain for infants.  The same treatment may also be used to soothe pain caused by emerging wisdom teeth or after oral surgery to reduce discomfort and inflammation.

10. Dry Up Swimmer’s Ear
Otitus externa – commonly known as ‘Swimmer’s Ear’ – is caused by microbial infection of the ear canal.  Use an eye dropper to insert several drops of witch hazel into each ear to dry up pus, clear away excess oil, and break up wax and debris that may be clogging the ear canal.  Allow ears to drain then clean gently with a cotton swab or cosmetic pad.  Follow up with a natural anti-microbial like basil oil, apple cider vinegar, or tea tree oil.

11. Soothe Diaper Rash
Anti-inflammatory properties of witch hazel make it an effective and safe remedy for soothing pain from diaper rash.  Regular application will also assist in healing damaged skin faster, further reducing your baby’s discomfort.

12. Cool Down Sunburn
Mix some witch hazel in with your Aloe Vera gel the next time you need to treat a sunburn.  The anti-inflammatory power of this incredible plant extract will aid your skin in healing while it and the Aloe help to cool the burn.  This treatment can also help to prevent skin from peeling in the days following a bad burn.

13. Neutralize Contact Dermatitis
Because of its drying and anti-itch power, witch hazel can also be used to counter the effects of skin-irritating plant compounds like urushiol, the sap oil contained in poison ivy, poison oak, and poison sumac that causes contact dermatitis in about 85% of adults who come in contact with it.

14. Bug Bites and Stings
Just as witch hazel can be used to ease pain and itching from poison ivy and its cousins, the same works for bug bites and stings. Yet another reason to carry a small bottle of this awesome remedy with you the next time you plan to spend a day outdoors!

FEVER CONTROL

In ways we don't often realize, many of our prominent diseases are intimately associated with our exposure to chemicals of various kinds, from kitchen detergents and exhaust fumes, to powerful drugs.

We've become so accustomed to contact with chemicals and drugs that we have idiomatic expressions in our language, such as "harmless as an  aspirin:' However, we shouldn't regard any exposure to a chemical not  native to the body or the natural environment as being harmless, or to be used safely, without restraint.

Aspirin

Aspirin, the trade name for acetylsalicylic acid, should be looked at carefully; since about 10,000 Americans lose their lives each year because of its use, not counting deaths from accidental overdosage in children.

Some 40,000 tons are used worldwide to the tune of $1.6 billion in sales each year, making it the most common nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) in use. However, approximately five percent of those taking aspirin will have heartburn after a single dose, and stomach bleeding and ulceration may follow in susceptible individuals. This affliction results in most of the deaths from aspirin.

Aspirin can double the time necessary for human blood to clot, increasing the likelihood of hemorrhage, but the most disabling of the adverse reactions by far, is that of asthma. This is often caused by very small amounts of the drug, and may be accompanied by swelling of the larynx, abdominal pain, and shock. In an occasional case, death may occur within minutes, but fortunately, this type of sensitivity occurs in less than 0.2 percent of the general population.

Aspirin overdose is a major cause of death in children up to 6 years of age, accounting for more than 500 deaths each year. Great care should be taken to protect unborn babies from drugs, no matter how mild - including antacids, antihistamines, or any other drug or chemical. This point cannot be emphasized too strongly, as many infants are marked for life because of a small exposure to a chemical the mother took while pregnant. Often the defect in the child is of a biochemical nature, rather than a structural abnormality

Fever Control

Fortunately, most fevers can be easily controlled without NSAIDs. A hot bath of 105-110° F can easily treat common fevers by sitting in it until the skin is quite red, and profuse sweating occurs. It is important to keep an ice-cold cloth to the forehead after the first five minutes - or from the beginning, if the fever starts out over 101° F.

Take a cup of hot water or hot herb tea when sweating begins, and after 10-20 minutes, when the skin is red and the patient is sweating profusely; finish off by taking a brief spray of cool water over the entire body from the chin downward.

Follow up with a quick friction rubdown with a coarse towel, then wrap up in a bathrobe, jump in bed, and sweat for a full half-hour. After this, take a normal shower to cleanse the skin and relieve the sense of chilliness after sweating, and re-dress. If the treatment has been a good one, a sensation of weakness may develop after a minute or so of standing' because of the transfer of blood from the interior of the body to the exterior. This is normal, and should be followed with a period of rest.
