Cream of Tartar

Cream of tartar (potassium bitartrate) is an expensive cleaning ingredient.

This long-forgotten gem of a cleaning agent may be used with a little water or vinegar to lift even the most stubborn stains. Unattractive grout driving you batty? Mold and mildew stains got you overwhelmed? Burner pans and casserole dishes giving you fits? Cream of Tartar is your new best friend.

Cream of tartar is one of nature’s best bleaching agents. Cream of tartar, a.k.a “crusted wine,” is mixed with baking soda to create baking powder (bet you didn't know that.. okay, some of you probably did, you smarty-pants). While it is an acid, it’s not harmful. It’s an acidic salt which comes from grapes.

Use a few tablespoons of cream of tartar with hot water or hydrogen peroxide and clean any aluminum pans which have discoloration or any rusty drains, pans, or stains.

Do you have copper kettles? Mix some cream of tarter with lemon juice and rub the copper with it. Rinse and be amazed!

How about a porcelain sink, tub, commode? Rub the porcelain surfaces with cream of tartar and watch the stains disappear.

Fabric stains? No prob. Mix a few teaspoons of cream of tartar with some glycerin and use like spray-and-wash. The results? Well, I’m here to tell you that this stuff cured the ring around Joshua’s shirt collars.

Just need a great nonabrasive cleaner? Mix 2 teaspoons of vinegar and 2 teaspoon of cream of tartar in a small dish (use 3 or 4 teaspoons of vinegar and 3 or 4 teaspoons of cream of tartar if you have more items to clean). Apply with your cleaning rag or scrub brush and let it sit for 5-10 minutes. Scrub. Wash with hot soapy water.

Aloe Vera

One of the home remedies that is useful in treating many different types of ailments is aloe vera. The plant is a relative of the onion, and one of its best-known and most commonly used applications is for burns. Every home should have an aloe vera plant growing in the kitchen, so when someone gets burned, it can be used immediately.

Burns
If one is near the sink, the very first action should be to cool the burned place with cool or cold water, then dry it gently and apply the juice of an opened aloe leaf directly onto the burned skin. While I do not know of any double-blind studies done on burns, there is enough folklore concerning the use of aloe to give me confidence that aloe vera is a good dressing for a third degree burn. We have treated several third degree burns that we felt would surely require skin grafting, but healed without Significant scarring.

Gastrointestinal Problems
Aloe vera is also used for gastrointestinal problems, and nearly any affliction of the gastrointestinal tract can be properly treated by aloe vera gel or juice. Simply take an ounce or two once or twice daily along with a meal. The liquid is not unpleasant as a drink.

If one has peptic ulcers or gastritis, aloe vera liquid is one of the best treatments for it. It has a soothing and healing effect, and can also relieve pain, burning, and discomfort. Use of aloe vera liquid can bring prompt relief for gas or acid formation. It can also help heal hemorrhoids very quickly.

It should be noted that aloe vera liquid has a slightly stimulatory effect on the colon, so if one takes a large quantity of aloe vera liquid or gel, there is a possibility of getting mild diarrhea. For this reason aloe vera is helpful for constipation.

Skin Problems
Aloe vera is a very good treatment for most skin afflictions, from poison ivy to eczema. Simply rub the liquid or gel directly onto the area of dermatitis, or open a leaf of aloe and rub the gelatinous material from the interior of the leaf directly onto the skin.

You may get the idea that the listing of the virtues of aloe vera sounds like the hawking of a medicine man's wares, but we urge you to buy a small plant about six inches high and cultivate it into a beautiful, lush, cactus-looking house plant about three feet high.

Try it on your family and friends, and you'll be impressed, too!
