Veggie Burgers


If I go somewhere and they want to cook me veggie burgers from the store, I am scared of the ingredients in those frozen meat flavored patties. My response to their offer is always “No thank you, I’ll bring my own” and here’s why:

Neurotoxins & Carcinogens – The majority of store-bought veggie burgers contain some form of soy. Non organic soy is extracted using hexane, a chemical byproduct of petroleum refining. The food industry uses the hexane extraction method because it is cheap. Several studies have been published about the neurotoxicity of exposure of humans and animals to hexane, but the most alarming ones link exposure to brain tumors. Currently the FDA sets no limit to the amount of hexane that can be used in non-organic soy products and no one knows for sure how much residue is being consumed by the American public. If you want more info on this – the Cornucopia Institute released an excellent report about several popular veggie burger brands that use hexane. To quote top researcher Charlotte Valleys, “The bigger picture here is that hexane is being released into the atmosphere—since it’s an air pollutant. It leads to smog, which is ground-level ozone, which leads to a whole bunch of health problems, like asthma in kids. These effects are very real.” I don’t want this in my body or in the air I breathe – do you?

Cheap Oils – If you see the words “canola oil, soy oil, corn oil, sunflower, and/or safflower oil” it is likely extracted with hexane too. But what further complicates this matter (if having a neurotoxin byproduct in your burger is not enough) is that the overconsumption of these cheap oils are causing an abundance of Omega 6 fatty acids in our diets. The imbalance of Omega 6 fatty acids increases the risk of inflammation, heart disease, obesity, and prostate and bone cancer.

Textured Vegetable Protein, aka “TVP” – Several frozen veggie burgers available are developed using soy products and Textured Vegetable Protein (TVP). TVP is one of those foods I avoid at all costs and no one will ever convince me to eat something this processed. TVP is extracted from soy at a super high heat and made into a powder before it is “reshaped” into strips, chunks and granules and put back into food. The processing can also add artificial and natural flavors, MSG, colorings, emulsifiers and thickening agents, including nitrosamine, which is a carcinogen no one should be consuming. Does this picture of TVP look like nutritious nuggets of real food to you?

Chemically Altered Flavorings & MSG – There are several hidden sources of MSG found in vegetarian meat substitutes. The food industry uses MSG to make processed food that is low in nutrition taste good, tricking your taste buds into liking something that isn’t real food. Futhermore, MSG increases your insulin response, tricking your body into thinking you can eat more than you actually should. And this is exactly how scientists make rats obese, by feeding them MSG laced food. I don’t know about you, but knowing there is a potential substance that can trick me into eating more food is reason enough to avoid this at all costs. But MSG is linked to all sorts of terrible reactions in humans like migraines, toxicity, and autoimmune disorders that you can read about in this tell all book about MSG.

Full of Genetically Modified Ingredients (GMOs) – If the burger contains anything derived from corn or soy, you can almost guarantee it comes from genetically modified seeds unless it is certified 100% organic. Genetically modified foods have been linked to toxicity, allergic reactions and fertility issues and have not been studied for their long term effects on our health. Unfortunately, here in the US, companies can get away with including GMOs in our foods without us knowing it. The Morningstar Farms Black Bean Burger, along with several other brands are guilty of every one of these points above. This burger is marketed as “healthy” and has even more questionable ingredients like caramel coloring (which is linked to cancer) and a slew of other chemical based preservatives. Knowing that I used to eat this particular brand many years ago on a weekly basis, absolutely disgusts me now. I don’t know about you, but I am tired of processed and convenience foods making a fool out of me…share this info with all your veggie burger buying friends and spread the word.

How To Clean and Freshen Your Mattress


Put approximately 1 cup of baking soda into a small mason jar and add 4 to 5 drops of Lavender essential oil (you can, of course, use your favorite scent) and give it a good shake! This was enough to do half my king-sized bed. I just quickly shook up another batch for the other side.

Before you start it’s a good idea to strip off all your bedding and wash it in HOT water (at least 130 degrees)! This will kill the dust mites in your sheets and blankets. While your bedding is in the washing machine, pour enough baking soda through a sifter or strainer to lightly dust your mattress with it. Leave on for an hour or more, allowing it time to draw out dirt, moisture, and odor.

Using the hose end of your vacuum and an upholstery attachment, thoroughly vacuum the mattress. Vacuum slowly so that you’re using the vacuum suction efficiently to pull out as much debris from within the mattress as possible.

The baking soda not only draws out moisture and dirt, but it also deodorizes and leaves the mattress smelling fresh and clean. The Lavender oil helps calm stress and anxiety and promotes sleep….plus it just SMELLS wonderful!

Lemons

I saw this on Facebook and thought it would be a good blog this week!

Amazing frozen lemons. All it is.....is a frozen lemon.

Many professionals in restaurants and eateries are using or consuming the entire lemon and nothing is wasted. How can you use the whole lemon without waste?

Simple…place the washed lemon in the freezer section of your refrigerator. Once the lemon is frozen, get your grater, and shred the whole lemon (no need to peel it) and sprinkle it on top of your foods.

HEALTH NEWS ~ MARCH

Happy March! Spring is coming soon!  Here is a great recipe to try with out meat. 

Lentil Barley Stew

5 c. water
½ c. whole grain barley
1 onion
2-3 sliced carrots
1 t. salt
1 t. basil
1 c. lentils
2-3 diced potatoes
1 T. dried parsley
1 ½ c. tomato sauce

Rinse lentils, and then put in pot with the water.  Simmer until almost done, then add remaining ingredients and cook on low in pot till done.

Meat is just not safe to eat anymore. Have you ever read what the Bible and inspiration says about it?  There is so much, I don’t know what to leave out, but here are some very good quotes that spoke to my heart.

If you read Genesis 5:5, 5:8, 5:11, 5:14 and 9:29 you will see that the life of the race BEFORE the flood was that man lived much longer.

The life span was drastically shortened after the flood when man was permitted to eat meat. Genesis 11:10-32, 25:7, 35:28, 47:28, and 50:26

One more significant change was recorded after the flood in Gen 11:28 and that was a child died before a parent.

Did you know there was a stipulation given to man when eating meat? Lev 3:17, 7: 26, 27 & 17:10-14…it says NO FAT or BLOOD!

Do you know that God ONLY gave permission to eat animal food to shorten their sinful lives?  CD 373.

“Flesh meat creates disease and insubordination.”  CD 375

“Our habits of eating and drinking show whether we are of the world or among the number whom the Lord by His mighty cleaver of truth has separated from the world.  These are His peculiar people, zealous of good works.” CD 379

“God gave rebellious Israel flesh, but His curse was with it.  Thousands of them died while the meat they desired was between their teeth.  We have the warning for us NOT to do as they did.”   CD 379

“How can those who are seeking to become pure, refined, and holy, that they may have the companionship of heavenly angels, continue to use as food anything that has so harmful and effect on soul and body?” CD 380

“Vegetables, fruits and grains should compose our diet.  Not an ounce of flesh meat should enter our stomachs. The eating of flesh is unnatural.”  CD 380

“Among those who are waiting for the coming of the Lord, meat eating will eventually be done away; flesh will cease to form a part of their diet.”  CD 380-381

Some of the most popular meats have been tested and rejected by failing to meet minimum health standards.  Consumer Reports magazine made an extensive research on hamburgers and gave the results in August, 1971.  “A shocking large percentage of the hamburger we purchased was well on the way to putrefaction.”

Ralph Nader, whose organization did a prolonged investigation of packing houses, summed up their findings on hamburgers and hot dogs in the Florida magazine November 7, 1971:

“All these processed meats constitute an imaginative food innovation; they are often used as a handy and profitable dump that allows the packers to get rid of their scraps, substandard or diseased meat, and their less desirable cuts.  All they do is douse all these inferior leftovers with coloring and seasoning agents, and market them to an unsuspecting public.  Court evidence has shown that contaminated meat, horse meat, and meat from diseased animals that was originally slated for dog or cat food has often wound up as hamburger or sausage; while lungs, eyeballs, pig blood and chopped hides are mixed into hot dogs and luncheon meats.

“To reduce the stench and foul taste, such meat is frequently impregnated with sulfite, an illegal additive that gives old decaying meat a healthy pink blush.  Since the meat used is often filthy, detergents are frequently used to wash off the dirt, and to stretch profits, so-called binders are added to hold the shreds of meat together---generally cereals, but occasionally sawdust.”

If that was 1971 it must be worse now…and I sure don’t want to be eating sulfite, detergents and sawdust ! Do you?

“A diet of flesh meat tends to develop animalism.....animalism lessens spirituality, rendering the mind incapable of understanding truth.”  CD 381

“Those who use flesh meat disregard all the warnings that God has given concerning this question. They have not the slightest excuse for eating the flesh of dead animals. Many times when meat is eaten, it decays in the stomach, and creates disease. Cancers, tumors, and pulmonary diseases are largely caused by meat eating.” CD 383

“When will those who know the truth take their stand on the side of right principles for time and for eternity? When will they be true to the principles of health reform? When will they learn that it is dangerous to use flesh meat? I am instructed to say that if ever meat eating were safe, it is not safe now.” CD 384

“Cancers, tumors, and all inflammatory diseases are largely caused by meat eating.” CD 388

“The meat diet is the serious question. Shall human beings live on the flesh of dead animals? The answer, from the light that God has given is, No, decidedly No.” CD 388

“It is impossible for those who make free use of flesh meats to have an unclouded brain and an active intellect.’ CD 389

The intellectual, the moral, and the physical powers are depreciated by the habitual use of flesh meats. Meat eating deranges the system, beclouds the intellect, and blunts the moral sensibilities. We say to you, dear brother and sister, your safest course is to let meat alone.”  CD 391

“Meat is not essential for health or strength…All the elements of nutrition are contained in the fruits, vegetables, and grains.” CD 395

“The liability to take disease is increased tenfold by meat eating.” CD 386

“There are those among Seventh-day Adventists who will not heed the light given them in regard to this matter. They make flesh meat a part of their diet. Disease comes upon them. Sick and suffering as a result of their own wrong course, they ask for the prayers of the servants of God. But how can the Lord work in their behalf when they are not willing to do His will, when they refuse to heed His instruction in regard to health reform?” CD 400

“Flesh foods are injurious to the physical well-being, and we should learn to do without them. Those who are in a position where it is possible to secure a vegetarian diet, but who choose to follow their own preferences in this matter, eating and drinking as they please, will gradually grow careless of the instruction the Lord has given regarding other phases of the present truth, and will lose their perception of what is truth; they will surely reap as they have sown.” CD 402

...dead carcasses should always be looked upon as not fit to compose the diet of Christians.” CD 414

There is so much in the SOP for us to read and learn its amazing…God really does want us to change our diets and go back to the original one He gave us in the beginning. 

In the light of so much counsel on the subject, how can we explain why almost half of our people still feed on the dead bodies of animals?

Do you know what the definition of food is?  It is things that give the body nutrition by the same time NOT causing harm.  Let’s eat real food then and not cause harm to our body that God gave us.
